Anita Norris Model Management

Anita Norris Model Management

In March 2010, the owner of Anita Norris Model Management (ANMM) was trying to discern a strategic direction to best serve the growth of her company. Its quick growth in the past two years was due to the owners’ efforts to pursue any revenue stream opportunity that presented itself. The owner was concerned that this pace was unsustainable in the long run and would in fact stretch the business too thinly. Currently, the business’s revenue stemmed from four main areas: modeling workshops, signing and booking models, model development and speaking fees. The owner wanted to develop a future business strategy that would allow her to focus the business and spend the majority of her time on developing and managing her models. To do this she had to carefully analyze the strengths and weaknesses of her company within the context of her competitors and the industry as a whole.

Responsible Research for Better Business

Responsible Research for Better Business

This book gathers original, empirical and conceptual papers that address the complex challenges of conducting responsible research in the business and management professions. It includes contributions related to, and reflecting on, the vision of the Responsible Research in Business and Management (RRBM) network, which proposes that business can help provide a better world if it is informed by responsible research. The responsible research agenda requires new methods of scholarly assessment that include criteria for measuring impact, systemic solutions and practitioner relevance. Theories greatly influence business and management practices, and as the late Sumantra Ghoshal warned, bad management theories are destroying good management practices. The authors of this book believe that good management theories can help to create new and better business practices.László Zsolnai is a Professor and Director of the Business Ethics Center at theCorvinus University of Budapest, Hungary. He is the Chairman of the Business Ethics Faculty Group of the CEMS - The Global Alliance in Management Education – and serves as President of the European SPES Institute in Leuven, Belgium.Mike Thompson is the Leader of People Services at Anthesis, the global sustainability services group. He was formerly a Professor of Management Practice at the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) and is now a Visiting Professor at the Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in Suzhou, China. Fuzzy Sets and Systems III

Fuzzy Sets and Systems III

In a world shaped by interconnected systems and global challenges, this third and final volume of the trilogy explores how digital technologies can foster ethical engagement at the societal level. Grounded in design science and fuzzy logic, it investigates how scalable, sustainable frameworks can support democratic participation, environmental responsibility, and public trust. The book offers a vision for how information systems can mediate complex societal interactions while preserving human values.Volume III addresses the societal dimension of the honorable merchant, applying ethical principles to broader systems involving politics, the public, and the environment. Drawing from interdisciplinary applications in business informatics, computer science, and engineering, it explores fuzzy approaches to conversational agents, smart logistics, participatory governance, voting advice systems, privacy calculus, and spatial modeling. A concluding framework for responsible action emphasizes ethical engagement in technologically mediated societal interactions. This textbook trilogy is primarily intended for students of computer science, business information systems, and innovation management who aspire to make a meaningful impact. Globalisation Fractures

Globalisation Fractures

In his previous books, The Bill from the China Shop and China and America: A Time of Reckoning, Charles Dumas was the first to identify the existence and potential impact of the Eurasian Savings Glut - most importantly how it would push US mortgage borrowing to excess, precipitating the global credit crisis. As we now strive to rescue the international financial system, he points to uncomfortable truths about the conflicts ahead. The US has reverted to debt-driven growth (this time, government debt), and its economic benefit is waning while the risk increases. China is veering back to export-led growth and large surpluses, increasingly at others' expense. Europe is squeezed between them, and the fixed-rate euro system is creating a subsidiary set of extreme imbalances: the Mediterranean cannot expand demand, while north-central Europe will not expand it. Globally, the choice may soon be between serially degrading US federal credit or putting up trade barriers. The first would undermine the world financial system, but the second would damage world trade, at huge expense to real incomes everywhere.Globalisation Fractures confronts the inherent conflicts as issues to be urgently addressed. This is the battleground upon which the future of the global economy will be determined.

Enduring Success

Enduring Success

Enduring Success addresses a key question in business today: How can companies succeed over time? To learn the source of enduring greatness, author Christian Stadler directed a team of eight researchers in a six-year study of some of Europe's oldest and most stellar companies, targeting nine that have survived for more than 100 years and have significantly outperformed the market over the past fifty years. Readers may wonder, "Why European companies?" Yet, Europe is the ideal place to seek the key to long-term success; half of the Fortune Global 500 companies that are 100 years old or older can be found in Europe, as can 72 of the 100 oldest family businesses in the world.Fifteen years after Collins and Porras' Built to Last, this new book incorporates fresh insights from management science and provides the first non-US perspective on long-range success. Through Stadler's study, a counterintuitive story emerges: the greatest companies adapt to a constantly changing environment by being intelligently conservative. Enduring Success provides a coherent framework, grounded in five principles and practical concepts, for business leaders who are prepared to learn from the history of some of the world's greatest institutions. Parole magiche

Parole magiche

Populism and Economics

Populism and Economics

Populism and Economics, Charles Dumas' latest book, examines the reasons for the rise in populism - Brexit and the election of Trump among other events - and how this discontent with the status quo has affected economics, both perceptions and reality. The book argues that while globalization and the influence of new technology have pulled the world economy out of recession and while the benefits of world trade are now spread more widely, there is a perception of injustice because of inequality within individual nations. In a detailed region-by-region analysis of the current state of the world economy and using exclusive research carried out by TS Lombard, Dumas shows how the perception of inequality now threatens to destabilize not only politics but also the economic order itself.

The Flexible Enterprise

The Flexible Enterprise

The need for enterprise flexibility in an era of rapidly advancing technology, increasing competition, and globalization, is apparent. Flexibility can be thought of as an ability of the enterprise to quickly and efficiently respond to market changes and to bring new products and services quickly to the market place. Beyond this definition, a truly flexible enterprise should proactively change the market through its ability to create new and innovative products and services. The proposed book is intended to provide a conceptual framework of ‘Flexible Enterprise’ supported by researches/case applications in different types of flexibilities exhibited by a flexible enterprise. The selected papers covering a variety of issues concerning the planning and operation of a flexible enterprise are organized into following four parts:I Enterprise and Strategic FlexibilityII Organizational FlexibilityIII Business Process and Information Systems FlexibilityIV Operations Flexibility

IT Sustainability for Business Advantage

IT Sustainability for Business Advantage

IT Sustainability for Business Advantage speaks to modern managers in all functions as well as to IT professionals. Implementing an effective IT sustainability strategy is essential for organizations pursuing sustainability as a means of business advantage and this book shows how to do it. The critical first step is getting clear about the ends of the IT sustainability program--the mission must be to further the company's sustainability objectives and strategic intents should include: 1) Making IT operations as sustainable as possible; 2) Partnering with other functions to leverage IT in making their business processes more sustainable and to grow the business; and 3) Building a culture of sustainability within the IT organization. The next step is to implement strategies to achieve these ends and the book explores the ways and means of doing this. These include industry best practices on how to apply the processes, techniques, and technologies related to Green IT and IT for Sustainability (ITfS). They also include techniques for change management and building social capital.

The Great Stagnation

The Great Stagnation

Tyler Cowen’s controversial New York Times bestseller—the book heard round the world that ignited a firestorm of debate and redefined the nature of America’s economic malaise. America has been through the biggest financial crisis since the great Depression, unemployment numbers are frightening, media wages have been flat since the 1970s, and it is common to expect that things will get worse before they get better. Certainly, the multidecade stagnation is not yet over. How will we get out of this mess? One political party tries to increase government spending even when we have no good plan for paying for ballooning programs like Medicare and Social Security. The other party seems to think tax cuts will raise revenue and has a record of creating bigger fiscal disasters that the first. Where does this madness come from? As Cowen argues, our economy has enjoyed low-hanging fruit since the seventeenth century: free land, immigrant labor, and powerful new technologies. But during the last forty years, the low-hanging fruit started disappearing, and we started pretending it was still there. We have failed to recognize that we are at a technological plateau. The fruit trees are barer than we want to believe. That's it. That is what has gone wrong and that is why our politics is crazy. In The Great Stagnation, Cowen reveals the underlying causes of our past prosperity and how we will generate it again. This is a passionate call for a new respect of scientific innovations that benefit not only the powerful elites, but humanity as a whole.
