Does God Control Everything?

Does God Control Everything?

Many people today believe that, even if there is a God, He is not actively involved in this world. Biblical Christianity has taken a very different view, teaching that God, not fate or free will, is the primary cause of what is and what happens. In this booklet, Dr. R.C. Sproul explores the Christian doctrine of providence, the teaching that God is the sovereign Ruler of the universe. Dr. Sproul then answers some common questions: What is chance? Is God responsible for human wickedness? What about human freedom? The Crucial Questions booklet series by Dr. R.C. Sproul offers succinct answers to important questions often asked by Christians and thoughtful inquirers.

Rational Mysticism

Rational Mysticism

The author of The End of Science chronicles the most advanced research into such experiences as prayer, fasting, and trances in this “great read” (The Washington Post). How do trances, visions, prayer, satori, and other mystical experiences “work”? What induces and defines them? Is there a scientific explanation for religious mysteries and transcendent meditation? John Horgan investigates a wide range of fields—chemistry, neuroscience, psychology, anthropology, theology, and more—to narrow the gap between reason and mystical phenomena. As both a seeker and an award-winning journalist, Horgan consulted a wide range of experts, including theologian Huston Smith, spiritual heir to Joseph Campbell; Andrew Newberg, the scientist whose quest for the “God module” was the focus of a Newsweek cover story; Ken Wilber, prominent transpersonal psychologist; Alexander Shulgin, legendary psychedelic drug chemist; and Susan Blackmore, Oxford-educated psychologist, parapsychology debunker, and Zen practitioner. Horgan explores the striking similarities between “mystical technologies” like sensory deprivation, prayer, fasting, trance, dancing, meditation, and drug trips. He participates in experiments that seek the neurological underpinnings of mystical experiences. And, finally, he recounts his own search for enlightenment—adventurous, poignant, and sometimes surprisingly comic. Horgan’s conclusions resonate with the controversial climax of The End of Science, because, as he argues, the most enlightened mystics and the most enlightened scientists end up in the same place—confronting the imponderable depth of the universe.

Understanding the Great Tribulation (Revised)

Understanding the Great Tribulation (Revised)

The Great Tribulation is a global event that everyone will experience. It occurs to get Christians to re-focus. Its divine goal is to get God's people focused upon the end of man's rule upon the earth. Everything currently happening in our global society is keeping all humanity off focus. There are several teachings about the end times. But they come short of teaching believers how to be found worthy to escape all that is coming to pass. Being found worthy does not occur by changing our outward behavior. Such effort insults the Spirit of Grace. See Hebrews 10:29. It is not how much we know about the end times that makes us worthy to escape all that is coming. It is how much we mirror our Lord Jesus Christ.

Saved by His Life

Saved by His Life

What does “Christ died for us” mean? Why does the Bible say that we were reconciled to God through the death of Jesus and that we shall be saved by his life? What is the meaning of God's incarnation in the first place? Why “God with us”? In this book we will try to answer these and other questions about salvation, first by reconstructing the origin of the various theories that have been proposed throughout history. We will discover that, to this day, there is no agreement among theologians on many fundamental points of the doctrine of redemption, and we will come up with our own hypothesis, which is exhaustive and does justice to God's mercy. To do so, we will rediscover some lost biblical concepts that will help us to recover the original idea of salvation. We will show that it is intrinsically linked to the nature of God, which was fully manifested in the faithfulness of Jesus Christ and the gift of his life. We will also understand why we are called to identify ourselves in him and in his love, since it is the source, foundation, and ultimate goal of salvation.

Life Words from Gospel Addresses

Life Words from Gospel Addresses

The wonderful results which have followed the evangelistic labours in this country of the two devoted American brethren whose names are now familiar to us as household words, has once again brought home to the Church of God the great truth that the Gospel of Christ, when faithfully proclaimed, is the power of God unto salvation, and that its sufficiency is not of man, but of God. Not with enticing words of man’s wisdom; not with lofty claims to a superior spiritual discernment, or to a polished and captivating oratory; but with all simplicity, with all plainness of speech, yet with an intense conviction of its truth, and a heartfelt earnestness, has that proclamation of the Gospel been made which thousands of late have flocked to hear from the lips of Mr. Moody.Yet the very homeliness and simplicity which characterize Mr. Moody’s utterances, accompanied as they are by a most graphic descriptive power, springing from his own vivid conceptions of truth, have been the means of bringing home to the popular mind the great truths which he has set forth in a far more forcible manner than could have been accomplished by the aid of a more rhetorical art. And if with these there be taken into account the deep spiritual experience and the full Scriptural knowledge which always distinguish Mr. Moody’s teachings, we shall in some degree understand the success which, through the blessing of God, has hitherto attended his labours. One of the most common experiences, perhaps, of those who have had the privilege of listening to Mr. Moody is that his words carry with them a recurrent power, continually cropping up afterwards with somewhat of their original force; a sure token of vigorous and effective speech, albeit, occasionally it may be, crude and homely in form. But this often is as——— “flowers on furze,The better the uncouther:Do roses stick like burrs?”It was the above fact that suggested the idea of the present little volume, with the belief that the compilation in a book form of some of the more striking passages of his discourses would be gladly welcomed by many, as a lasting memento of Mr. Moody’s visit to England. The following pages consist of a selection of such passages, taken from short-hand notes of the addresses delivered by Mr. Moody in Glasgow, Manchester, and London; and they are now sent forth in the hope that they may in some small degree supplement his own work, and be found useful in arousing the thoughtless, in giving light and strength to the anxious and the earnest, and in magnifying the love and grace of God.CrossReach Publications

The Law and the Promise

The Law and the Promise

By the time he published The Law and the Promise in 1961, Neville was well-established as a leading metaphysical teacher and lecturer, and had a substantial following of students who recognised his gift for revealing fundamental metaphysical principles. Neville's appreciative audience provides the material for much of this book: its first fourteen chapters present case studies that illustrate how Neville's students applied his teachings. These case studies present inspiring examples of how people used Neville's principles to heal illness, manifest abundance, and render a wealth of seeming "miracles" in their lives.

Heaven

Heaven

In this issue of the Free Grace Broadcaster, entitled: “Heaven,” J. C. Ryle introduces us to the subject of heaven with a brief account of that divine region from the lips of Christ Himself. Edward Donnelly beautifully describes heaven itself as the place of God’s glory. Paul Helm shows us that, based on Scripture alone, heaven is redemptive, fixed, and final. Few people have ever had the great gift of describing the things of Christ with such beauty as did Charles Spurgeon. His vision of the Beatific Vision and the glory of seeing Christ should stoke the longing soul with living hope. Heaven, that place of God’s glory, is a world of love, says Jonathan Edwards—a place where we will, in love, all be filled with the fullness of God. Thomas Brooks picks up where Spurgeon leaves off, expanding on the glory of our experience with God the Father and Christ the Son: the best and choicest presence of God and Christ is reserved in heaven! Thomas Reade enriches our hearts with meditations on heaven. Meditate here, friend, and set your hearts on fire with the hope that lies before us. What is your vision of heaven? Is it robes, harps, and sitting on clouds forever? Derek Thomas paints a challenging biblical picture of the new heaven and the new earth. Edwards, in a second article, tells us how to seek that blessed world of love and how to avoid hell, the world of hatred. And last, we complete our journey to the Celestial City with a portion from John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress.
