Behind the Lyrics: The Beatles

Behind the Lyrics: The Beatles

Love was a central theme in The Beatles catalogue. Romantic love, Desperate love, sexual love, and Just love as a universal feeling - they were ever-present in their albums and singles. And it's no wonder why those tracks have stood the test of time. The Beatles songs were never as dense as Bob Dylan’s or as raunchy and direct as the Rolling Stones’. However, they were taken no less seriously at the time, as Beatles’ songs were always believed to ‘mean’ something. Thirty years after the band stopped playing, those songs still mean something to us. They are like old friends we met when we were young and made life a little more exciting and easier to cope with. Because of what they did for us, we have great affection for them. We hold such affection for them that it makes sense to find out where they came from. Their songs became the soundtrack of every teen and young adult at the height of Beatlemania, and even decades later, their music remains the standard by which all others are measured. Though they have dozens of musical masterpieces in their arsenal, one theme that’s ever- present in every album and most singles is LOVE.

A few days later on June 13th the live show from Dortmund’s Westfalenhalle was filmed for the famous German music TV series Rockpalast and is presented here for the first time with footage restored to the best possible quality. Lone

Lone

Lone is a stunning visual accompaniment that explores the themes behind Chelsea Wolfe’s critically acclaimed album Pain is Beauty, focusing on the concepts of nature, sexuality, memory, mortality, forgiveness, love, innocence, fragility, violence and beauty. The film was co-written by Wolfe and directed by Mark Pellington, who’s remarkable career includes the era-defining, award-winning video for Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy, ” as well as his canon of videos for U2, INXS, Nine Inch Nails, Foo Fighters, Moby, Michael Jackson, and feature films I Melt With You, The Mothman Prophecies, and Arlington Road, among others. The concept behind Lone was birthed out of a mutual desire between Wolfe and Pellington to expand upon the concept of a classic music video. What began as an idea for a nine minute short film extended into what is now just under an hour-long piece, with Pellington fleshing out the concept surrounding Chelsea’s lyrics and music.

Ludovico Einaudi: Apple Music Live From the Steve Jobs Theater

Ludovico Einaudi: Apple Music Live From the Steve Jobs Theater

For piano superstar Ludovico Einaudi, answering the question “Is It Finished?”—the title of this exclusive performance, filmed and recorded on June 12, 2019, at Apple Park's Steve Jobs Theater—isn’t really the point. "I prefer the unfinished state,” he tells Apple Music. “It's a place where things might still change and evolve.” That approach allows for a certain kind of magic to happen—and it’s key to this world-premiere work. Einaudi's unique musical language melds classical compositional technique with influences from rock, folk, pop, and other genres to create a wide and daring embrace of style and form. As these 12 pieces—at turns joyful, melancholic, and ruminative—unfold, we get to witness one of music’s most game-changing artists in a rare environment, simultaneously onstage and in his studio, where, amid his piano, desk, books, cameras, and other tools, new forms of expression are constantly taking root. Backdropped by vivid, thought-provoking visuals, Einaudi, cellist Redi Hasa, and violinist/violist Federico Mecozzi mix pieces from the composer's concert repertoire—taken from albums including Elegy for the Arctic, Elements, and 2019’s Seven Days Walking series—with others played for the very first time: “There is a balance between moments of ‘search' and others where the music flows with more definition,” Einaudi says of the work’s exploratory instincts. “It's a creative space where your mind can still wander.”
