Yuvraj Vijay Singh (Salman Khan) a prince of Pritampur, is soon to be crowned as king and is engaged to Princess Maithili (Sonam Kapoor). His step-brother Yuvraj Ajay Singh (Neil Nitin Mukesh) wants to kill him and take the crown. Yuvraj Vijay barely escapes a plan coordinated by Yuvraj Ajay to kill him and he's hidden in a secret chamber. Meanwhile, Vijay's lookalike Prem Dilwale (Salman Khan) a perky, lively and carefree stage actor falls in love with Princess Maithili, reaches Pritampur to meet her. The Security Head of Pritampur Palace, Sanjay (Deepraj Rana) notices him by chance, and takes him to Diwan Sahib (Anupam Kher). Upon witnessing the striking resemblance he and Yuvraj Vijay come up with the plan that Prem take Yuvraj Vijay's place while Yuvraj recovers in a hideout. Prem acts as Yuvraj Vijay but with his simple and caring nature, impresses Maithili who earlier wanted to break up with Vijay. The truth reveals itself and Maithili is shocked to know the truth about Prem.

Vaidehi is trying hard to be the son of her family, but is constantly bombarded with the realities of small town India, where for a woman, a happy married life is given more importance than a career. Badrinath Ki Dulhania is the story of these two opposites. Their interactions lead to humor, difference of opinions and conflicts, which are against the moral fabric of MCP’s in general. But ultimately it’s a film about understanding and realization. Badri understands that the role of women in society is very different from what he had grown up seeing and he comes to admire and appreciate their potential. Vaidehi realizes that Badri’s MCP attitude is not his, but a product of his upbringing and underneath it all lies a simple boy looking for love and true companionship. Here in lies the essence of the film.

Adi gradually strikes a bond with them, integrating into their lives. At a chance encounter during his friend’s wedding, he meets Tara (Shraddha Kapoor). She is a recent architecture school graduate working in an architecture firm. She dreams of going to Paris to pursue higher education. The cheerful banter soon gives way to a conversation where both Adi and Tara realize that they strongly feel that marriage isn’t for them. They are happy to find a kindred soul in each other who feels just the same. They ask each other out for coffee and start hanging out more often. They have fun in each other’s company. They both sense the palpable attraction but consciously try to keep a distance as they think the constant proximity can only lead to one thing but they find themselves drawn to each other and are unable to stay apart…and despite their conservative backgrounds, the relationship transcends into a physical one.
