Le phénomène publicitaire déborde la seule problématique de la consommation des objets et de la reproduction des besoins pour devenir une modalité de l’échange social. Plus que la répétition des images et des slogans, plus que la fascination compulsive pour un « monde des objets », le langage publicitaire pénètre tous les modes du langage quotidien. Les intonations, les structures visuelles, les tournures linguistiques sont reprises dans les rapports sociaux mais elles deviennent surtout productrices de l’échange et permettent une mise en scène sociale articulée sur les mêmes modèles culturels. La publicité sur les loisirs, sur l’habitat crée une représentation de l’espace réductrice de toute l’ambivalence propre à l’appréhension du corps dans le milieu environnant : la division, le découpage le plus rationalisé coïncident avec la représentation de l’infini, de l’ailleurs ou de l’espace sans limites. Plus que le langage de l’apparence généralisée, le langage publicitaire développe, essentiellement dans sa forme, un rythme obsessionnel de la pratique sociale. Les mots, les images, les sons devenant des choses — ou des représentations de choses — le langage publicitaire pourrait presque se comparer à une activité mentale dominante. Dès lors, le « consommateur », personnage fictif, n’est plus un récepteur harcelé de messages, il n’est que l’alibi d’un langage sans sujet qui s’accomplit dans une véritable compulsion symbolique de l’échange. Le choix du bien de consommation et l’objet de l’échange n’ont plus d’importance : la conscience d’un achat bien déterminé ferait échouer le processus consommatoire. Ainsi le phénomène publicitaire tend-il à simuler l’enjeu d’un désir absolu, dépassant les limites d’une « société de consommation » encore dominée par le culte de l’objet.
