Sie gelten heutzutage als Voraussetzung, um sich zum einen in der Gesellschaft zu etablieren und zum anderen um sich in der Berufswelt durchsetzen und weiterentwickeln zu können. Besonders die Unternehmen legen viel Wert auf Bildung ihrer Mitarbeiter, da sie es sind, die täglich Entscheidungen treffen müssen und durch ihre Arbeit das Unternehmen prägen. Um den Mitarbeitern die Arbeit zu erleichtern und insbesondere den Herausforderungen, die sich in der heutigen Zeit ergeben, stellen zu können, wird die berufliche Weiterbildung in den Unternehmen immer bedeutender. Gründe hierfür sind beispielsweise die Globalisierung, wodurch viel internationaler gedacht und gehandelt werden muss und ebenso die enorme Wettbewerbsituation der Unternehmen, wodurch immer neue Herausforderungen an die Unternehmen und die Mitarbeiter gestellt werden. Die Problematik besteht nun darin, herauszustellen, welche Anforderungen an die Personalentwickler gestellt werden und wie diese sich fortbilden können - vielmehr wie sich diese fortbilden müssen, um ihren Job professionell ausführen zu können. Es gibt eine Vielzahl an Möglichkeiten, sich weiterzubilden, ob nun innerbetrieblich oder außerbetrieblich von externen Weiterbildungsanbietern. Im Einzelnen sind dies Fachtagungen, Kongresse, Seminare, Fortbildungen, Kurse an Hochschulen oder durch Personalberatungen etc..
