Africa in the Doha Round: Dealing with Preference Erosion and Beyond

Africa in the Doha Round: Dealing with Preference Erosion and Beyond

Improving market access in industrial countries and retaining preferences have been Africa's two key objectives in the Doha Round trade negotiations. This paper argues that African negotiators may have overlooked the potential market access gains in developing countries, where trade barriers remain relatively high and demand for African imports has expanded substantially over the past decades. As reductions in most-favored-nation tariffs in industrial countries will inevitably lead to preference erosion, African countries need to ensure that the Doha Round leads to liberalization in all sectors by all World Trade Organization (WTO) members, so that the resulting gains will offset any losses. Such an outcome is more likely if African countries also offer to liberalize their own trade regimes and focus on reciprocal liberalization as a negotiation strategy rather on preferential and differential treatment.

The History of World Tariffs

The History of World Tariffs

Summary of The History of TariffsBy Peter PhillipsThe History of Tariffs offers a sweeping examination of one of the oldest and most controversial tools in economic policy. From the earliest customs duties imposed by ancient empires to the complex trade wars of the modern global economy, this book traces how tariffs have shaped commerce, diplomacy, and national identity across centuries.Beginning with the role of tariffs in early civilizations and their importance in funding emerging nation-states, the narrative moves through pivotal moments such as the British Corn Laws, American protectionist policies in the 19th century, and the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930, which deepened the Great Depression. It highlights the ideological battles between free trade advocates and protectionists and examines how tariffs were used as both economic weapons and tools of domestic development. The book also explores the formation of trade alliances and international organizations like the GATT and the WTO, which sought to regulate and reduce tariffs in the post-war era. In the 21st century, it analyzes the resurgence of tariff debates amid shifting geopolitical landscapes, particularly in the context of U.S.-China relations, Brexit, and populist movements challenging global trade norms.Through accessible analysis and historical context, The History of Tariffs presents a clear-eyed view of how this fiscal instrument has influenced world events, protected industries, sparked conflict, and helped define the economic paths of nations.

Mathematik – Management – Meditation

Mathematik – Management – Meditation

Corporate Social Responsibility in Times of Crisis

Corporate Social Responsibility in Times of Crisis

This book explores national and transnational companies' Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities in times and settings in which they are confronted with economic and social challenges and analyzes these situations, ranging from the financial crisis to fourth generation sustainability. Presenting a number of different cases from various parts of Europe, North America and Africa, it showcases how companies respond to the challenges of the development, consultation, implementation, integration, measurement and consolidation of CSR. Further it specifies how these corporations deal with uncertainties over corporate and financial resources, global financial stability and growing evidence for climate change. The book describes CSR adaptation under challenging circumstances and argues for the strategic and operative legitimation of Corporate Social Responsibility in times of crisis.

The Next Decade

The Next Decade

The author of the acclaimed New York Times bestseller The Next 100 Years now focuses his geopolitical forecasting acumen on the next decade and the imminent events and challenges that will test America and the world, specifically addressing the skills that will be required by the decade’s leaders. In the long view, history is seen as a series of events—but the course of those events is determined by individuals and their actions. During the next ten years, individual leaders will face significant transitions for their nations: the United States’ relationships with Iran and Israel will be undergoing changes, China will likely confront a major crisis, and the wars in the Islamic world will subside. Unexpected energy and technology developments will emerge, and labor shortages will begin to matter more than financial crises. Distinguished geopolitical forecaster George Friedman analyzes these events from the perspectives of the men and women leading these global changes, focusing in particular on the American president, who will require extraordinary skills to shepherd the United States through this transitional period. The Next Decade is a provocative and fascinating look at the conflicts and opportunities that lie ahead.

TSC Stores: Supply Chain Management for Profitable Growth

TSC Stores: Supply Chain Management for Profitable Growth

In May 2007, the chief operating officer at TSC Stores in London, Ontario, asked the director of distribution to evaluate the company's supply chain strategy and make recommendations to the board of directors. The chief operating officer was concerned about the ability of the company's supply chain to support the corporate business plan, which called for 20 per cent annual growth over the next three years. Preliminary analysis indicated that TSC would need more distribution capacity by first quarter 2008, which gave the director of distribution only six to eight months to evaluate options and implement a plan. The chief operating officer and the board would want to know the process and schedule that the director of distribution intended to follow to deal with the evolving capacity demands in distribution.

Paradoxes of Power and Leadership

Paradoxes of Power and Leadership

Why do great companies and other organizations fail, sometimes abruptly? Why do admired leaders fall from their organizational pedestals? Why do young and promising managers derail? Why do organizations create and reinforce rules that manifestly damage both them and those that they employ, serve and sustain? Leadership is a much-discussed but ill-defined idea in business and management circles. Analysing and understanding the skills and behaviours exhibited in leadership practice reveal that leaders exhibit paradoxical activities that challenge our understanding of organizations. In this text, the authors identify leadership behaviours that compete towards business equilibrium: selfish versus selfless, distance versus proximity, consistency versus individuality, enforcing professional standards versus flexibility and control versus autonomy. These paradoxical dilemmas require a reflexive and analytical approach to a subject that is tricky to define. The book explores the paradoxes of power and leadership not as a panacea for solving organizational problems but as a lens through which leadership and power are seen as an exercise in dynamic balance. Read this book as an invitation to the paradoxes of power and leadership that frame organizational life today. Be prepared to find surprises – and some counterintuitive arguments.Providing a thought-provoking guide to the traits and skills that will help readers to understand and navigate paradoxical leadership behaviour, this reflexive book will be a useful reading for students and scholars of business, management and psychology globally.

Disrupted

Disrupted

“People don’t get exponential” - Nicholas NegroponteIn the next 5 years, global Machine-to-Machine connections will grow by 400% from 5 billion to over 20 billion. In the past six years Uber has grown from a mere app to a 50 billion-dollar business. The driverless electric car is a reality, and the noxious methane gas that once escaped the Artic Ocean in meter-wide plumes now bubbles out of the water in kilometer-wide columns. This is exponential change… and it’s happening now!We are in an environment where the exponential “elbows” of multiple systems are converging and disrupting lives and organizations at an accelerated rate. Disruptive change is turning business models upside-down, destroying legacy value, and opening the possibility for revolutionary futures to emerge across all industries. This is new territory. And if there was ever a time we needed to “get exponential” – it is now! And in this environment organizations have two choices: leverage disruptive, exponential change to generate new value or fall afoul of its consequences. In the convergence of accelerating change, the strategic planning processes of yesteryear are inadequate. Tenuous visions and missions framed across five to ten-year time horizons are predicated on a slower pace of life. Too often, these approaches produce irrelevant strategies with rapidly diminishing shelf lives and little power to inspire team members, let alone leverage exponential change.Disrupted is a distillation of the wisdom of Resilient Futures’, Strategy in Action (SiA), a framework designed to support teams and leaders to leverage—rather than fall prey to— exponential, disruptive change.Disrupted is a guidebook to the exponential era and a toolbox for proactively leveraging this change. By exploring well-known examples of disruption-opportunists like Apple and Tesla Motors, Disrupted helps readers to understand the kind of “strategic thinking” that allow teams and leaders to confidently pursue opportunities with a shared strategic language, and a methodology designed for timely and agile execution at all levels of their organization. In Disrupted we are challenged to confront exponential change and ask ourselves:“What are our disruptors, and how will we leverage them?”

Canadian Solar

Canadian Solar

In late September 2009, the CEO of the Nasdaq-traded solar cell and module manufacturer, Canadian Solar, was at an inflection point in the formation of its international strategy. The company had experienced dynamic growth during the past five years buoyed largely by aggressive incentive schemes to install solar photovoltaic (PV) technology in Germany and Spain. The credit crunch, coupled with changes in government incentive programs, caused a major decline in the demand for solar PV technology and analysts were predicting that full year 2009 sales would decline. Furthermore, competition in the industry was fierce with diverse players ranging from Japanese electronic giants to low-cost Chinese producers. Canadian Solar had decided to focus on 10 major markets in the next two to three years where strong renewable policies existed. Students are challenged with deciding if any changes to the company's global strategy are necessary.

Management, Organizations and Contemporary Social Theory

Management, Organizations and Contemporary Social Theory

Social theorists speculate about large-scale social questions, asking of any phenomenon, how is it possible? This book addresses how various social theories contribute key insights into the nature of organizations and management. The cast of characters to be found in this book have had a transcendental impact, including on the practices of the management and organization disciplines. For students, however, engaging with social theory in a conversation that is much broader and potentially richer than those that may have been previously encountered is not at first easy. The question is where to begin: this book provides answers.Drawing on research from international contributors, this valuable textbook is an essential resource for students and introduces key social theories and theorists making them accessible to a management audience. The chapters include objectives and end-of-chapter reflective questions, as well as a glossary for readers grappling with new terms.

Makers

Makers
