Ciudadanos, no clientes

Ciudadanos, no clientes

Strategic Risk Management

Strategic Risk Management

Successful companies share a common characteristic of dealing with the emergent risks and threats in responses that generate viable solutions.Strategic risk management (SRM) is a multidisciplinary and rather fractured field of study, which creates significant challenges for research. This short-form book provides an expert overview of the topic, providing insight into the theory and practice. Essential reading for strategic management researchers, the authors frame the fundamental principles, emerging challenges and responses for the future, which will also provide valuable insights for adjacent business disciplines and beyond.

Bankruptcy Not Bailout

Bankruptcy Not Bailout

Fixing Dodd-Frank--a new proposal for bankruptcy law The events of the last several years on Wall Street make a compelling case for comprehensive, fundamental reform in the oversight of financial firms. In Bankruptcy Not Bailout, a group of expert contributors show why, if a new addition to the bankruptcy laws--Chapter 14--were implemented along with other genuine reforms, the changes could strengthen the US financial system and provide the impetus the US economy needs to thrive once again. The authors reveal the weaknesses in Dodd-Frank Title II, showing how the current law creates an elaborate, and potentially cumbersome, bureaucratic procedure for triggering seizure of a financial company--and tell why Chapter 14 could greatly improve that process, creating greater financial stability and reducing the likelihood of bailouts. They lay the groundwork for a return to a clearer, more rules-based oversight regime that relies more on real capital and true market forces and urge adoption of a Chapter 14 even were Dodd-Frank left untouched. Enlightened Planning

Enlightened Planning

Strategy, risk management and project management are often considered separately by those applying their principles—but at their most effective, all are dependent upon each other for success. Enlightened Planning teaches this holistic perspective and demonstrates how a synthesis of these approaches yields far greater opportunities. A strategic, calculated risk, for example, can be less inherently risky than chronic risk aversion over time. Here, a respected specialist and teacher demonstrates how to become an 'enlightened planner', one that is aware of project, strategy and risk concerns, and their potential interplay. Following the core principle of Keep It Simple Systematically, he shows how organised, systematic thought processes can demystify the complexities of decision-making when considering a huge variety of concerns at once. Supported throughout with real-life cases from the author’s considerable experiences with commercial organisations, it is also supported by a website containing even more cases, learning and teaching materials. This book is essential reading for any practitioner specialising in risk management, project management or strategy; as well as those teachers or participants in executive programmes.

Capital Flight from Russia

Capital Flight from Russia

This paper documents the scale of capital flight from Russia, compares it with that observed in other countries, and reviews policy options. The evidence from other countries suggests that capital flight can be reversed once reforms take hold. The paper argues that capital flight from Russia can only be curbed through a medium-term reform strategy aimed at improving governance and macroeconomic performance, and strengthening the banking system. Capital controls result in costly distortions and should gradually be phased out as part of that medium-term strategy.

Chinese Fireworks Industry - Revised

Chinese Fireworks Industry - Revised

The Chinese fireworks industry thrived after China adopted the "open door policy" in the late 1970s, and grew to make up 90 per cent of the world's fireworks export sales. However, starting from the mid-1990s, safety concerns led governments both in China and abroad to set up stricter regulations. At the same time, there was rapid growth in the number of small family-run fireworks workshops, whose relentless price-cutting drove down profit margins. Students are asked to undertake an industry analysis, estimate the industry attractiveness, and propose possible ways to improve the industry attractiveness from an individual investor's point of view. Jerry Yu is an American-born Chinese in New York who has been invited to buy a fireworks factory in Liuyang, Hunan.

Corporate Social Responsibility in Sub-Saharan Africa

Corporate Social Responsibility in Sub-Saharan Africa

This book provides a comprehensive overview of corporate social responsibility and its development in Africa. It provides in-depth studies on 11 sub-Saharan countries, demonstrating that corporate social responsibility is forming and going through different stages of metamorphosis in the continent. Though corporate and individual attitudes towards sustainability in Africa still leave a lot to be desired, this book showcases how things are rapidly changing for the better in this regard. It demonstrates and provides evidence for the fact that corporate social responsibility contributes significantly to the way sub-Saharan African economies are being transformed, with service sectors expanding, commercial activities diversifying and industrial bases growing through the initiatives of small, medium and large organizations and innovators supported by widespread higher-education program rollouts. The book highlights how progressive and wide-ranging CSR approaches have emerged, and how much they differ from the obsolete approaches of the past, which promulgated negative stereotypes, marginalized communities and positioned them as victims or beneficiaries of development.

Development Ethics at Work

Development Ethics at Work

In recent years, global institutions such as the World Bank have become increasingly conscious of the role that ethical reflection may play in leading towards more successful knowledge and policy for development. This key book, written by Denis Goulet (founder of the field of development ethics), gathers together his main contributions in three distinct parts, covering:the early journeys of the author's thinking an exposition of the main themes he has explored the transition from early alternative development to alternative globalizations. Goulet examines the evolution of development ethics, illustrates how a development ethicist can function in varied development arenas, explores the ethical dimensions of competing change strategies, and investigates the language of interdependence which prevails in development discourse. The interdisciplinary work traces not only Goulet’s own thinking but also wider theoretical debates, seeking to integrate the findings of analytical, policy, and normative ‘sciences’, as they bear on the development process at the practical level. This makes it an essential read for postgraduates and professionals in the field of economics.

The Illusion of Transparency in Corporate Governance

The Illusion of Transparency in Corporate Governance

“This book offers a penetrating analysis of the sharp realties of the state of corporate governance… the concept of transparency only confi rms the status quo. The meaning of transparency is overwhelmed by the prerogatives of the current norms and practices, and the deep-seated values of shareholder primacy underlying contemporary business. The authors demand a more authentic and truthful approach to determining the purpose of the corporation and the resulting estimations of its performance.”— Professor Thomas Clarke University of Technology SydneyTransparency is generally seen as a corporate priority and a central attribute for promoting business growth and social morality. However, from a philosophical perspective, society has experienced a gradual paradigm shift which intensified after the Second World War with the advent of the information era. Therefore, as transparency serves both as a fundamental part of an inescapable, hegemonic capitalist system, and as a moral imperative, this book examines and challenges the concept of transparency as to its true governance value in building a sustainable twenty-first century. Rather than clinging to the fantasy of complete transparency as the only form of accountability, corporate governance is strengthened in this way by practicing true social responsibility, which emerges not from outward-looking compliance but from a deeper place in the corporate psyche through inward-looking contemplation and the development of moral maturity. This book will be of use to scholars working on corporate governance, business ethics, CSR, and the philosophy of business.Finn Janning, PhD, is a writer and philosopher.
