Que era suficiente presentar en algunas lineas las soluciones que a nuestro parecer eran buenas y utiles en lo que respecta a los programas, a la exposicion de los cursos y a la orientacion de los estudios para dar a este informe su sentido y su eficiencia. Si finalmente preferimos un camino mas largo fue porque aqui, en un pais joven, donde el futuro se extiende sin cesar y normalmente sobrepasa las promesas del presente, nuestros actos revisten una gravedad y un alcance que tienen origen en su importancia y que exigen ser meditados y sopesados en forma mas extensa y minuciosa que en otras partes. La denominacion de esta catedra --Historia de la civilizacion-- es en si misma un programa, y esto fue, por cierto, lo que quisieron los fundadores de la Facultad. Dieron a su titular un dominio sin limites, le confiaron a su estudio los anales completos de la Humanidad, en el tiempo y en el espacio. Esa actitud era quiza una recomendacion tacita de que nos elevaramos cuanto fuese posible por encima de lo que se relaciona exclusivamente con la erudicion, de lo que dice sobre el recurso a los arsenales bibliograficos y a la herboristeria de las instituciones. En Africa del norte y en Siria se encuentran numerosas ruinas romanas, tan disfrazadas que no se revelan a la simple observacion.
