Generous Justice

Generous Justice

Renowned pastor and bestselling author of The Prodigal Prophet Timothy Keller shares his most provocative and illuminating message yet. It is commonly thought in secular society that the Bible is one of the greatest hindrances to doing justice. Isn’t it full of regressive views? Didn’t it condone slavery? Why look to the Bible for guidance on how to have a more just society? But Timothy Keller challenges these preconceived beliefs and presents the Bible as a fundamental source for promoting justice and compassion for those in need. In Generous Justice, he explores a life of justice empowered by an experience of grace: a generous, gracious justice. This book offers readers a new understanding of modern justice and human rights that will resonate with both the faithful and the skeptical.

An Exhortation to Peace and Unity

An Exhortation to Peace and Unity

Beloved, religion is the great bond of human society; and it were well if itself were kept within the bond of unity; and that it may so be, let us, according to the text, use our utmost endeavours "to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace." These words contain a counsel and a caution: the counsel is, That we endeavour the unity of the Spirit; the caution is, That we do it in the bond of peace; as if I should say, I would have you live in unity, but yet I would have you to be careful that you do not purchase unity with the breach of charity.

The Tibetan Book of the Dead

The Tibetan Book of the Dead

The best-known work of Nyingma literature, the oldest of the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism, the “Bardo Thodol”, or “The Tibetan Book of the Dead” is the work of Tibetan Buddhist spiritualism first revealed by Karma Lingpa in the 14th century. “The Tibetan Book of the Dead” is part of a larger corpus of texts called the “Profound Dharma of Self-Liberation through the Intention of the Peaceful and Wrathful Ones” which is believed to have been composed by Padmasambhava in the 8th century and written down by his student Yeshe Tsogyal. Intended as a work to help guide the spirit in the afterlife from death to the next rebirth, “The Tibetan Book of the Dead” describes the experiences that the consciousness will have after death. The work also includes descriptions of the signs of death and the rituals that one must undertake to prepare for the journey following one’s death. This volume presents the English translation of Walter Evans-Wentz first published in 1927 which helped to popularize the work in the West.

Biblical Conspiracies: The James Revelation

Biblical Conspiracies: The James Revelation

In 2002, a stunning discovery makes headlines around the world. The excitement centres on a five word Aramaic (a Hebrew-like language spoken in much of the Middle East in Jesus’ time) inscription etched on the side of a 1st century Jerusalem ossuary (a limestone burial box) that reads “James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus.” If authentic, this is the first time that Jesus’ name appears not on parchment, but carved in stone. This would be the first archeological proof of Jesus’ existence. More than this, if authentic, this bone box once held the mortal remains of the man the Christian Bible calls, “The Brother of the Lord” (Gal. 1:19). Some scholars hail the find as a great archaeological discovery others call it a hoax. The James Revelation investigates this controversial artifact, dubbed the “James Ossuary”, and the fallout from its discovery. Oded Golan, the owner of the ossuary, is soon accused of masterminding an international forgery ring that plants fake artifacts in museums around the world. His is a spectacular trial that sharply divides scholars. Will the court find the inscription a forgery? This enhanced eBook is a companion to The James Revelation, part of the documentary series, Biblical Conspiracies, produced by Associated Producers Ltd. for VisionTV. Each hour-long episode investigates hidden truths encoded in ancient objects.

Tao Te Ching

Tao Te Ching

The Tao Te Ching, Daodejing, or Dao De Jing (道德經: 道 dào "way"; 德 dé "virtue"; 經 jīng "classic" or "book") also simply referred to as the Laozi, is a Chinese classic text. According to tradition, it was written around the 6th century BC by the sage Laozi (or Lao Tzu, "Old Master"), a record-keeper at the Zhou Dynasty court, by whose name the text is known in China. The text's true authorship and date of composition or compilation are still debated, although the oldest excavated text dates back to the late 4th century BC. The text is fundamental to both philosophical and religious Taoism and strongly influenced other schools, such as Legalism, Confucianism and Chinese Buddhism, which when first introduced into China was largely interpreted through the use of Daoist words and concepts. Many Chinese artists, including poets, painters, calligraphers, and even gardeners have used the Daodejing as a source of inspiration. Its influence has also spread widely outside East Asia, and is amongst the most translated works in world literature. The Wade–Giles romanization "Tao Te Ching" dates back to early English transliterations in the late 19th century; its influence can be seen in words and phrases that have become well-established in English. "Daodejing" is the pinyin romanization.

Memory, martyrs, and mission

Memory, martyrs, and mission

Essays to Commemorate the 850th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of St Thomas Becket (c. 1118-1170) | Foreword by Mgr Philip Whitmore Rector of the Venerable English College, Rome. Essays by Judith Champ, Peter Davidson, Eamon Duffy, Peter Leech, Peter Phillips, Carol M. Richardson, Nicholas Schofield. Edited by Maurice Whitehead | The murder on 29 December 1170 of Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, sent shockwaves across the Christian world. The combination of his martyrdom, his canonization in 1173, and the creation of a shrine to him at Canterbury in 1220 increased the importance of the Via Francigena – the ancient pilgrim route from Canterbury to Rome: indeed the English Hospice, founded in Rome in 1362 for pilgrims from England and Wales, was dedicated to the Most Holy Trinity and St Thomas of Canterbury. The transformation in 1579 of the English Hospice into a new English College in Rome, preparing future priests to serve on the dangerous post-Reformation mission to England and Wales, engendered further martyrdoms: between 1581 and 1679, forty-four members of the Venerable English College, Rome, were executed for serving as priests on the mission to England and Wales. Exploring three major themes – Memory, Martyrs, and Mission – this volume analyses, on the 850th anniversary of his death, the enduring legacy of St Thomas of Canterbury, expressed in English seminaries in continental Europe through their distinctive spiritual, artistic and literary activities; the resilience of those institutions to radical change over the centuries, in the face of revolution, war and social upheaval; and the challenges and opportunities for the effective formation of priests ready to meet the changing demands of mission in the twenty-first century. The volume concludes by demonstrating how music associated with St Thomas of Canterbury has resonated across the centuries, from soon after his martyrdom down to the present day.

Christ is All

Christ is All

Christ Is All  glorifies Christ. It presents the risen Savior as the Redeemer throughout history and, indeed, without beginning or end. It is a great encouragement both to the seeking soul and the seasoned saint. John Charles Ryle (1816-1900) began his service to the Lord as a minister of the Gospel. He labored in parish churches within the Church of England for almost forty years. He then became Bishop of Liverpool in 1880 and came to international prominence as preacher, Bible expositor, and author. Today he is best known for his plain and lively writings on practical and spiritual themes. He deliberately used this style to reach ordinary people. The great aim of his ministry was to encourage strong and serious Christian living. His tracts and books sold in the millions in the late 1800s. Many of these have been republished in modern times.
