New Testament Foundations

New Testament Foundations

Drawing upon over fifty years of scholarly experience of one of the most industrious contemporary scholars, this work, which was first published in 1975, has been revised, updated, and expanded to offer a fresh, in-depth introduction to the New Testament for today's students. Students will be immersed into the world of the first century, learning about both Greco-Roman and Jewish backgrounds. While discussing the fundamental questions surrounding the content of each book including its authorship, audience, and message, this work also engages with the wider historical-critical discussion, helping students navigate the wider world of modern New Testament scholarship.

What Is Theology?

What Is Theology?

Every seminary in the world offers classes on Christian theology, but what at is its core is theology? Is it a practical or theoretical discipline? Is it centrally a matter of faith or of reason? What are its proper means and ends? Derived from Michael Horton’s recently released The Christian Faith, already one of the most significant systematic theologies of the past 50 years, this digital short explores the discipline of theology through the lens of philosophy, Scripture, ministry, and the church, laying a foundation for pursuing theology as hearing, wisdom, understanding, and more.“Theology serves the function of articulating the identity of this God so that he may be properly invoked,” Horton writes. This short work constructs a conceptual framework for pastors, theologians, and students wanting to think more deeply about the foundational discipline of Christian thought and practice.

Expositions of Holy Scripture

Expositions of Holy Scripture

I connect the commencement and the close, because I think that the juxtaposition throws great light upon the purpose of the writer, and suggests some very important lessons. The reference to the former treatise which is of course the Gospel according to Luke implies that this Book is to be regarded as its sequel and the terms of the reference show the writer's own conception of what he was going to do in his second volume.

Buddhism

Buddhism

Buddhism, in its diverse forms and throughout its long history, has had a profound influence on Asian cultures and the lives of countless individuals. In recent times, it has also attracted great interest among people in other parts of the world, including philosophers. Buddhist traditions often deal with ideas and concerns that are central to philosophy. A distinctively Buddhist philosophy of religion can be developed which focuses on Buddhist responses to issues such as the problem of suffering, the purpose and potential of human existence, life after death, freedom and moral responsibility, appearance and reality, the nature of religious language, attitudes to religious diversity and the relationship between Buddhism and science. Buddhism: A Contemporary Philosophical Investigation examines some of the central questions that such ideas raise, drawing on ancient and more recent sources from a variety of Buddhist traditions, as viewed from a contemporary philosophical standpoint.

A Treatise on the Gift of Perseverance

A Treatise on the Gift of Perseverance

Persevering in Faith to the End Inspirational! In A Treatise on the Gift of Perseverance, St. Augustine authoritatively proves that the perseverance by which a man continues in Christ until the end is a gift from God by His grace. Therefore, anyone who perseveres is predestined while the others are not. He advocated that God’s elect will certainly persevere but that one’s election could never be known infallibly in this life. Augustine also believed one’s justification and baptismal regeneration could be rejected and lost through sin and unbelief! A good read!

The Writings of Florence Scovel Shinn

The Writings of Florence Scovel Shinn

This complete texts of all four of Florence Scovel Shinn's books, The Game of Life, Your Word is Your Wand, The Power of the Spoken Word, and The Secret Door to Success. Florence Scovel Shinn taught metaphysics in New York for many years. Her meetings were well attended and in that way she was the means of bringing the message to a considerable number of people. Her books have had a wide circulation not only in America but abroad. They seem to have a knack of finding their way to remote and unexpected places in Europe and other parts of the world. Now and again we meet someone who came into Truth through finding a Florence Shinn book in the most improbable location. She herself was very spiritual, although this was usually hidden behind a matter of fact and carefree treatment of her subject. The technical or academic approach was not for her. She taught by familiar, practical, and everyday examples.

Ave Atque Vale

Ave Atque Vale

This volume of essays examines a short one month period in the life of the Catholic Church in 2013. From the announcement of the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI on 11 February 2013 through the election of Pope Francis on 13 March, these essays come from a number of writers, theologians and poets. Ave Atque Vale - Hail and Farewell - is how the Roman poet Catullus ends his elegiac tribute to his deceased brother and has always been used to mark an end and a beginning. Whether it was 600 or 900 years since a pope resigned, the action is unprecedented in the modern papacy. This volume of essays is edited by Michael Kelly SJ and has contributions by Anne Elvey, Andrew Hamilton SJ, Joe Hodge, Anne Hunt, Rachael Kohn, Brian Lucas, James McEvoy, Andrew McGowan, Constant Mews, Michael Mullins, Desmond O'Grady, Neil Ormerod, and Philip Harvey, as well as poets Barry Gittins, Brian Doyle and BA Green. Most of the pieces first appeared in Australia's Eureka Street magazine in February and March 2013.

Abiding in Christ

Abiding in Christ

Using Jesus' words in John 15, "I am the vine; you are the branches," Andrew Murray explores how the believer abides in Christ. In a message as timely today as when first published in 1895, he urges readers to yield themselves to Jesus, in order that they may know the "rich and full experience of the blessedness of abiding in Christ."

What the Bible Says about How to Know God's Will

What the Bible Says about How to Know God's Will

At some point, every Christian wonders, What is God’s will for me in this situation? There are many situations for which Scripture doesn't provide a black-and-white answer. In this book, adapted from his larger work Christian Ethics, Wayne Grudem helps readers stop overcomplicating God’s will and instead embrace the different ways they acquire wisdom for daily life. He lays out guidelines for making decisions both big and small. After looking at the 4 dimensions of every action (the action itself, attitudes, motives, and results), Grudem works through 9 sources of information and guidance, both objective (information from the Bible, information from studying the situation, information about ourselves, advice from others, changed circumstances) and subjective (the conscience, the heart, the human spirit, and the Holy Spirit). Readers will gain insight into how to make the right decisions about situations that arise in their lives.

I Will Build My Church

I Will Build My Church

The need for ministry concerning the basic teachings in the Word of God on the subject of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ was never more evident than it is in our day. News media use such terms and phrases as, “the church without God,” or “the death of God,” with equanimity and without any apparent concern for the effect of the implication of these terms on the spiritual welfare of the youth of the rising generation. This volume is an attempt to direct attention to the purposes and principles related to the church: its form, features, and functions as these are revealed in the New Testament. A perusal of each chapter and attention to each suggested biblical reference will be found rewarding. The devout prayer of the author and his published is that unto God be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.
