It is only by a change of consciousness, by actually changing your concept of yourself, that you can "build more stately mansions" — the manifestations of higher and higher concepts. The world moves with motiveless necessity. By this is meant that it has no motive of its own, but is under the necessity of manifesting your concept, the arrangement of your mind, and your mind is always arranged in the image of all you believe and consent to as true. The rich man, poor man, beggar man or thief are not different minds, but different arrangements of the same mind, in the same sense that a piece of steel when magnetized differs not in substance from its demagnetized state but in the arrangement and order of its molecules. A single electron revolving in a specified orbit constitutes the unit of magnetism. When a piece of steel or anything else is demagnetized, the revolving electrons have not stopped. Therefore, the magnetism has not gone out of existence.

At the first National Conference on Christian Education of the United Church of Christ, held at Purdue University in the summer of 1958, Martin Luther King presented two notable devotional addresses. Moved by the clear and persuasive quality of his words, many of the 3000 delegates to the conference urged that the meditations be made available in book form. They wanted the book for their own libraries and they were eager to share Dr. King’s vital messages with fellow Christians of other denominations. In the resolute struggle of American Negroes to achieve complete acceptance as citizens and neighbors the author is recognized as a leader of extraordinary resourcefulness, valor, and skill. His concern for justice and brotherhood and the non-violent methods that he advocates and uses, are based on a serious commitment to the Christian faith. As his meditations in this book suggest, Dr. King regards meditation and action as indivisible functions of the religious life. When we think seriously in the presence of the Most High, when in sincerity we “go up to the mountain of the Lord,” the sure event is that “he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths” (Isaiah 2: 3).

Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God

The famous sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” by Jonathon Edwards was delivered on July 8, 1741 in Enfield, Connecticut and is considered by many to be the most famous sermon ever given in America. It was published soon after and was an immediate commercial success. The sermon is a perfect example of the “fire and brimstone” preaching style that Edwards was well-known for and is an informative insight into the spiritual teachings of the American religious movement known as the “Great Awakening”, that began in 1730. This movement was characterized by a teaching that hell was a real place and great suffering awaited any who were not saved by Christ and continued to sin. Edwards had been invited to preach by the pastor at the church at Enfield, which had largely been untouched by the growing “Great Awakening” movement. The sermon was powerfully delivered and instantly affected the listeners in a profound way. He continued to give the sermon several times and members of the congregation would often yell, cry out, or weep. This powerful sermon has endured the test of time and continues to be read, studied, and treasured to this day.
