The Everlasting Man

The Everlasting Man

Chesterton demonstrates in The Everlasting Man, a funny defence of Christianity that inspired C.S. Lewis, that once man is reduced to animal, history loses all meaning. The fact that man is so distinct from the creatures is what genuinely gives him dignity. What distinguishes Christianity is that it presents the story of the true man, the last man, the everlasting man, who came down through history and changed it. “This sketch of the human story began in a cave; the cave which popular science associates with the cave-man and in which practical discovery has really found archaic drawings of animals. The second half of human history, which was like a new creation of the world, also begins in a cave . . . It was here that a homeless couple had crept underground with the cattle when the doors of the crowded caravanserai had been shut in their faces. And it was here beneath the very feet of the passers-by, in a cellar under the very floor of the world, that Jesus Christ was born.” ~ From The Everlasting Man

The Antichrist: With an Introduction by Henry Louis Mencken

The Antichrist: With an Introduction by Henry Louis Mencken

Friedrich Nietzsche's "The Antichrist" might be more aptly named "The Antichristian," for it is an unmitigated attack on Christianity that Nietzsche makes within the text instead of an exposition on evil or Satan as the title might suggest. In "The Antichrist," Nietzsche presents a highly controversial view of Christianity as a damaging influence upon western civilization that must come to an end. Regardless of ones religious or philosophical point of view, "The Antichrist" makes for an engaging philosophical discourse.

The Collected Sermons of Dietrich Bonhoeffer

The Collected Sermons of Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Preaching, according to Bonhoeffer, is like offering an apple to a child. The gospel is proclaimed, but for it to be received as a gift depends on whether the hearer is in a position to do so. Offered here are thirty-one of Pastor Bonhoeffer's sermons, in new English translations, which he preached at various times of the year and in a variety of different settings. Each is introduced by Bonhoeffer translator Isabel Best, who also provides a brief biography of Bonhoeffer. The foreword is by Victoria J. Barnett, general editor of the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Works, English edition, published by Fortress Press, from which these sermons are selected. In his preaching, Bonhoeffer's strong, personal faith the foundation for everything he did shines in the darkness of Hitler's Third Reich and in the churches' struggle against it. Though not overtly political, Bonhoeffer' s deep concern for the developments in his world is revealed in his sermons as he seeks to draw the listener into conversation with the promises and claims of the gospel a conversation readers today are invited to join.

The Atheist's Creed

The Atheist's Creed

In The Atheist's Creed a prominent and widely-read contemporary philosopher, Dr Michael Palmer, presents the most comprehensive anthology of the major philosophical arguments for atheism now before the public. While the so-called 'new atheism' of RichardDawkins and others has attracted considerable publicity, it is these philosophical arguments that have down the ages provided the principal landmarks in the unfolding and increasingly widespread belief that no God exists. Using a combination of extracts, detailed introductions, biographies and extensive bibliographies, the author guides the reader through the history of atheism, from the time of the early Greeks down to the present day. In this analysis particular attention is given to the writings of Hume, Nietzsche, Marx and Freud. The Atheist's Creed requires no specialist knowledge of philosophy. Each chapter is structured around a single theme and the various authors coordinated to allow the full force of the particular atheistic argument to emerge. The result is a compelling and powerful assessment of the case for atheism, which will be essential and fascinating reading for student and non-student alike and for all those concerned with the fundamental question: whether or not there is a God.

The Coming Apostasy

The Coming Apostasy

Are we on the verge of a great apostasy in the church?“For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. They will reject the truth and chase after myths.” —2 Timothy 4:3-4Jesus Christ is coming back. It is certainly a Christian’s greatest hope during these difficult times. The Bible warns us that the last days will be tumultuous—wars and rumors of wars will spread (Matthew 24:6). In our age, the world seems to be spinning out of control, creating fear, confusion, and uncertainty. In addition to violence, pestilence, and epidemics, the Bible predicts a great “falling away” from God in the end times. Bible teachers call that “the great apostasy.” Are we seeing evidence today in the church of this massive rejection of sound and wholesome teaching? Bestselling authors Mark Hitchcock and Jeff Kinley team up to examine the evidence from the teachers of our time. Are today’s teachers allowing people to follow their own desires by telling them what they want to hear, as the Bible clearly predicts? Are major portions of the church ready to abandon sound and wholesome teaching?Together, Mark and Jeff explore alarming trends among today’s church leaders and they are simply stunned by what they discover. The great apostasy is coming, but is it closer than we imagine? What does that mean for the future? Let Mark and Jeff be your steady guides to the difficult days ahead.

Acque d'autunno

Acque d'autunno

A Treatise of Man's Imaginations

A Treatise of Man's Imaginations

William Perkins (1558-1602) was a Calvinist minister and theologian who was one of the foremost leaders of the Puritan movement in the Church of England. His “Works” were originally published in three large volumes spanning thousands of pages. However, he wrote a number of individual treatises that are exceedingly biblical, spiritual and helpful for Christians today. This work on man’s imaginations is taken from Genesis 8:21, “…For the imagination of man’s heart is evil even from his youth.” Not many years after the Synod of Dordt and the Arminian debate, Perkins penned this exposition that teaches total depravity in a practical framework. He covers the natural man’s thoughts and imaginations, and how those thoughts apply to God, his neighbor and himself. He then demonstrates the use of the doctrine that “God will have all or none of man’s heart,” and how that truth applies to all men in order to be reformed before God through Jesus Christ. This modernized version is not a scan or facsimile.

The Folly of God

The Folly of God

Caputo explores the idea that the real interest of theology is not God, especially not God as supreme being, but the unconditional. In The Folly of God he continues his exploration of the radical reading of Paul’s explosive language in 1 Corinthians 1, about the stand God makes with the nothings and nobodies of the world:  “At a time when Jews expect a miracle and Greeks seek enlightenment, we speak about God’s Anointed crucified! This is an offense to Jews, nonsense to the nations; but to those who have heard God’s call, both Jews and Greeks, the Anointed represents God’s power and God’s wisdom; because the folly of God is wiser than humans are and the weakness of God is stronger than humans are.” (1 Cor 1:22–25)

Good God

Good God

This book aims to reinvigorate discussions of moral arguments for God's existence. To open this debate, Baggett and Walls argue that God's love and moral goodness are perfect, without defect, necessary, and recognizable. After integrating insights from the literature of both moral apologetics and theistic ethics, they defend theistic ethics against a variety of objections and, in so doing, bolster the case for the moral argument for God's existence. It is the intention of the authors to see this aspect of natural theology resume its rightful place of prominence, by showing how a worldview predicated on the God of both classical theism and historical Christian orthodoxy has more than adequate resources to answer the Euthyphro Dilemma, speak to the problem of evil, illumine natural law, and highlight the moral significance of the incarnation and resurrection of Christ. Ultimately, the authors argue, there is principled reason to believe that morality itself provides excellent reasons to look for a transcendent source of its authority and reality, and a source that is more than an abstract principle.

Anointed with the Spirit and Power

Anointed with the Spirit and Power

A central truth of the Christian life is: we need the Holy Spirit in order to live it. Any individual who follows Jesus Christ must understand and depend on the Holy Spirit, the only inexhaustible power source in the universe. Without the it, we would have no lasting impact for God's kingdom. Why, then, do we hear so little teaching on the Holy Spirit in many of our evangelical churches? Anointed with the Spirit and Power traces the theme of Holy Spirit empowerment from Genesis to Revelation, focusing on the Spirit's ministry to individuals and giving special attention to the Spirit's involvement in the life, ministry, and mission of Jesus Christ. The Explorations in Biblical Theology series addresses the need for quality literature that attracts believing readers to good theology and builds them up in their faith. Each title in the series combines solid content with accessibility and readability—a valuable addition to the library of any college student, thoughtful lay reader, seminarian, or pastor. Endorsements "This latest volume in the promising Explorations in Biblical Theology series should prove useful to pastors, students, and reflective Christians. John Harvey guides us through the pivotal biblical texts related to the Holy Spirit’s empowering work, especially noting the Spirit’s empowerment of Old Testament leaders and prophets, the person and ministry of Jesus, and the early church. This book is well organized, clear, fair, and helpful." —Christopher W. Morgan "A first-class work that combines perceptive analyses, balanced insights, and helpful applications. Dr. Harvey is a first-class scholar, whose writing is crisp, direct, and engaging. His theology is thoroughly orthodox, and his insights, while expressed easily in common language, are profound. This is a small book on a big and explosive topic that is highly recommended for every Christian’s study and personal growth." —Richard N. Longnecker
