Finding Jesus, Discovering Self

Finding Jesus, Discovering Self

As we meet Jesus of Nazareth in the Gospel narratives, we come face-to-face with our own deepest selves.Finding Jesus, Discovering Self invites readers to see Jesus with new eyes and then explore, know, experience, and live questions about how 2000-year-old stories and events happen in the world and in our lives today. Each chapter focuses upon a passage from the Gospels. A narrative by one of the authors recalls a personal experience reflecting the ancient text. Questions to which there are no "right" answers offer multi-dimensional opportunities to explore the stories and wonder. Contemporary poetry and prose open new doors to meeting Jesus as a first century Jew and discovering creative, compelling, and challenging possibilities for one's own story, self, and relationship to God. Written by a Jewish author and an Episcopal priest, Finding Jesus, Discovering Self is a perfect volume for personal reflection or group study, and a unique resource for the Lenten season.

The Coming Apostasy

The Coming Apostasy

Are we on the verge of a great apostasy in the church?“For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. They will reject the truth and chase after myths.” —2 Timothy 4:3-4Jesus Christ is coming back. It is certainly a Christian’s greatest hope during these difficult times. The Bible warns us that the last days will be tumultuous—wars and rumors of wars will spread (Matthew 24:6). In our age, the world seems to be spinning out of control, creating fear, confusion, and uncertainty. In addition to violence, pestilence, and epidemics, the Bible predicts a great “falling away” from God in the end times. Bible teachers call that “the great apostasy.” Are we seeing evidence today in the church of this massive rejection of sound and wholesome teaching? Bestselling authors Mark Hitchcock and Jeff Kinley team up to examine the evidence from the teachers of our time. Are today’s teachers allowing people to follow their own desires by telling them what they want to hear, as the Bible clearly predicts? Are major portions of the church ready to abandon sound and wholesome teaching?Together, Mark and Jeff explore alarming trends among today’s church leaders and they are simply stunned by what they discover. The great apostasy is coming, but is it closer than we imagine? What does that mean for the future? Let Mark and Jeff be your steady guides to the difficult days ahead.

Acque d'autunno

A Treatise of Man's Imaginations

A Treatise of Man's Imaginations

William Perkins (1558-1602) was a Calvinist minister and theologian who was one of the foremost leaders of the Puritan movement in the Church of England. His “Works” were originally published in three large volumes spanning thousands of pages. However, he wrote a number of individual treatises that are exceedingly biblical, spiritual and helpful for Christians today. This work on man’s imaginations is taken from Genesis 8:21, “…For the imagination of man’s heart is evil even from his youth.” Not many years after the Synod of Dordt and the Arminian debate, Perkins penned this exposition that teaches total depravity in a practical framework. He covers the natural man’s thoughts and imaginations, and how those thoughts apply to God, his neighbor and himself. He then demonstrates the use of the doctrine that “God will have all or none of man’s heart,” and how that truth applies to all men in order to be reformed before God through Jesus Christ. The Folly of God

The Folly of God

Caputo explores the idea that the real interest of theology is not God, especially not God as supreme being, but the unconditional. In The Folly of God he continues his exploration of the radical reading of Paul’s explosive language in 1 Corinthians 1, about the stand God makes with the nothings and nobodies of the world:  “At a time when Jews expect a miracle and Greeks seek enlightenment, we speak about God’s Anointed crucified! This is an offense to Jews, nonsense to the nations; but to those who have heard God’s call, both Jews and Greeks, the Anointed represents God’s power and God’s wisdom; because the folly of God is wiser than humans are and the weakness of God is stronger than humans are.” (1 Cor 1:22–25)

Good God

Good God

This book aims to reinvigorate discussions of moral arguments for God's existence. To open this debate, Baggett and Walls argue that God's love and moral goodness are perfect, without defect, necessary, and recognizable. After integrating insights from the literature of both moral apologetics and theistic ethics, they defend theistic ethics against a variety of objections and, in so doing, bolster the case for the moral argument for God's existence. It is the intention of the authors to see this aspect of natural theology resume its rightful place of prominence, by showing how a worldview predicated on the God of both classical theism and historical Christian orthodoxy has more than adequate resources to answer the Euthyphro Dilemma, speak to the problem of evil, illumine natural law, and highlight the moral significance of the incarnation and resurrection of Christ. Ultimately, the authors argue, there is principled reason to believe that morality itself provides excellent reasons to look for a transcendent source of its authority and reality, and a source that is more than an abstract principle.

Anointed with the Spirit and Power

Anointed with the Spirit and Power

A central truth of the Christian life is: we need the Holy Spirit in order to live it. Any individual who follows Jesus Christ must understand and depend on the Holy Spirit, the only inexhaustible power source in the universe. Without the it, we would have no lasting impact for God's kingdom. Why, then, do we hear so little teaching on the Holy Spirit in many of our evangelical churches? Anointed with the Spirit and Power traces the theme of Holy Spirit empowerment from Genesis to Revelation, focusing on the Spirit's ministry to individuals and giving special attention to the Spirit's involvement in the life, ministry, and mission of Jesus Christ. The Explorations in Biblical Theology series addresses the need for quality literature that attracts believing readers to good theology and builds them up in their faith. Each title in the series combines solid content with accessibility and readability—a valuable addition to the library of any college student, thoughtful lay reader, seminarian, or pastor. Endorsements "This latest volume in the promising Explorations in Biblical Theology series should prove useful to pastors, students, and reflective Christians. John Harvey guides us through the pivotal biblical texts related to the Holy Spirit’s empowering work, especially noting the Spirit’s empowerment of Old Testament leaders and prophets, the person and ministry of Jesus, and the early church. This book is well organized, clear, fair, and helpful." —Christopher W. Morgan "A first-class work that combines perceptive analyses, balanced insights, and helpful applications. Dr. Harvey is a first-class scholar, whose writing is crisp, direct, and engaging. His theology is thoroughly orthodox, and his insights, while expressed easily in common language, are profound. This is a small book on a big and explosive topic that is highly recommended for every Christian’s study and personal growth." —Richard N. Longnecker

Treatise On the Incarnation

Treatise On the Incarnation

Athanasius of Alexandria's 'Treatise On the Incarnation' is a seminal work in Christian theology, focusing on the significance of the Word becoming flesh. Written in the 4th century, the book delves into the theological implications of the Incarnation, exploring how the divine becomes human and the implications of this transformative act. Athanasius employs a persuasive and logical argument, drawing on biblical texts and early Christian thought to defend the central beliefs of the Christian faith. The work is characterized by its clarity, precision, and deep theological insights, making it essential reading for scholars of Christian doctrine and history. Athanasius of Alexandria, known as the 'Father of Orthodoxy,' was a key figure in the early Christian Church and played a significant role in shaping theological doctrine. As a bishop and theologian, Athanasius was heavily involved in the debates surrounding the nature of Christ and the Trinity, and his writings reflect his deep understanding of these complex theological issues. I highly recommend 'Treatise On the Incarnation' to readers interested in exploring the foundational beliefs of Christianity and the theological controversies of the early Church. Athanasius's work remains a cornerstone of Christian theology and offers valuable insights into the mysteries of the Incarnation.

PODEMOS VENCER A BATALHA CONTRA A POBREZA GLOBAL. Teach Us To Pray

Teach Us To Pray

Teach Us to Pray by Charles Fillmore Affirmation is the core of prayer practice as taught by Jesus. In this undertanding of prayer, Jesus raised us from being mere beggars, asking for things of the physical world from a God "out there." Instead, he united us with our Source--our Father--reminding us that we are sons and daughters to the very essence of all that is, that we have direct and constant access to all we will ever need. The New Thought Movement or New Thought is a loosely allied group of organizations, authors, philosophers, and individuals who share a set of metaphysical beliefs concerning healing, life force, Creative Visualization, and personal power. The New Thought Movement developed in the United States during the mid to late 19th century and continues to the present time. It promotes the ideas that God is all powerful and ubiquitous, Spirit is the totality of all things, true human selfhood is divine, divine thought is a force for good, most sickness originates in the mind, and "right thinking" has a healing effect." (Quote from wikipedia.org) About the Author "Charles Fillmore (August 22, 1854 - July 5, 1948), born in St. Cloud, Minnesota, founded Unity, a church within the New Thought movement, with his wife, Myrtle Page Fillmore, in 1889. He became known as an American mystic for his contributions to metaphysical interpretations of Biblical scripture.

The Lost Mary

The Lost Mary

In this provocative reappraisal of the most famous woman who ever lived, a world-renowned historian of early Christianity and ancient Judaism lifts the veil on the human Mary to reveal her revolutionary role as the matriarch of the Jesus movementMary, mother of Jesus, is the best known—and least known—woman in history. Revered and worshipped by countless millions, she remains a figment of the imagination, the ethereal subject of Raphaels and Botticellis, bathed in heavenly light, too virginal and pure to move among us.But what about the real Mary? The young Jewish woman and single mother of eight—five boys and three girls. The defiant citizen of Roman-occupied Galilee who survived through one of the most dangerous periods of Jewish history—an ancient “game of thrones” that claimed the lives of two of her sons: Jesus by crucifixion and James by stoning. The historical Mary whose teachings and courageous example may in fact make her the “first founder” of what we now call Christianity. This Mary has not only been lost to us, she has been systematically erased over the past two millennia by a theological, cultural, and political program intent on removing her from the human realm and marginalizing her womanhood, motherhood, and Jewishness. In The Lost Mary, James D. Tabor corrects the record, laying out the results of his intensive textual and archaeological sleuthing over the past three decades, including new evidence regarding Mary’s genealogy (which may be hiding in plain sight in the New Testament!). Tabor’s quest for the historical Mary offers a transformative perspective on Jesus and his early followers, and recovers the nature and essence of earliest Christianity.

Feminista y cristiana

Feminista y cristiana
