La Dottrina Sociale della Chiesa. Sviluppo Storico

La Dottrina Sociale della Chiesa. Sviluppo Storico

Faith No Fancy

Faith No Fancy

Another quality eBook from Chapel Library. “Faith is called for, but take not every sort of faith for saving faith. It would make tender hearts bleed to see so many mistaken in the matter of their faith. There are some who say they had faith all their days—that they were convinced of the lamentable deceit and delusion they are under! Learn to distinguish between Faith and Fancy, between historical and temporary faith, and true saving faith. Though historical and temporary faith are not delusions, yet in so far as you rest on the same, and mistake them for saving faith, you are deluded, for saving faith puts you out of yourselves to rest on Jesus Christ; it brings the soul from the covenant of works to a new holding of life by Christ and His righteousness.”

Covenant

Covenant

As one of the most prominent themes in Scripture, the covenant is crucial to all Christian theological systems, from dispensationalism to covenant theology to theonomy to liberation theology. One would think that by now all controversies have been exhausted, but an issue of this magnitude can never finally be laid to rest. Because disagreements persist, there is room for yet another attempt to study the covenant and improve our understanding of it. This book proposes that the path toward an evangelical consensus is not to be found in building another modified systematic theology, but in a biblical theology approach. Grounded in this approach, John Walton's perspective is that while the covenant is characteristically redemptive, formulated along the lines of ancient treaties, and ultimately soteric, it is essentially revelatory. This view in turn has implications regarding the continuity or discontinuity of the covenant phases, the conditionality of the covenant, and our understanding of the people of God. And this ultimately affects the way the Old Testament is preached and taught. Walton's thesis is an important contribution to the discussion of the covenant and the attempts to find common ground among evangelicals of diverse theological traditions.

The Majesty of God in the Old Testament

The Majesty of God in the Old Testament

This new book by a trusted Old Testament scholar directs the student and pastor to an aspect of biblical truth often lacking in contemporary preaching and teaching: God's unsurpassed majesty and greatness. Kaiser suggests that a key way to recapture this important doctrine in the pulpit is through the preaching of the Old Testament--itself an oft-neglected or mishandled discipline. By expositing ten great Old Testament passages that are rife with evidence of God's majesty, he shows how today's preacher might address this deficiency. He also shows how such exercises as word studies and historical/archaeological studies can be used to help pastors make the Old Testament relevant to their congregations.

The Kabbalah Unveiled

The Kabbalah Unveiled

The Kabbalah is an esoteric Jewish doctrine adapted by author S.L. MacGregor Mathers to form the Hermetic order of the Golden Dawn, an occult organisation. This volume includes three of the critical books from the Zohar, the fundamental work in Kabbalah, as well as Mathers' introduction explaining the key elements of Jewish mysticism. Mathers' translation from Hebrew originally appeared in 1926, and it continues to be a valuable resource for students interested in Religious Studies, particularly Mysticism and the Occult.

Jerusalem

Jerusalem

Venerated for millennia by three faiths, torn by irreconcilable conflict, conquered, rebuilt, and mourned for again and again, Jerusalem is a sacred city whose very sacredness has engendered terrible tragedy. In this fascinating volume, Karen Armstrong, author of the highly praised A History of God, traces the history of how Jews, Christians, and Muslims have all laid claim to Jerusalem as their holy place, and how three radically different concepts of holiness have shaped and scarred the city for thousands of years.Armstrong unfolds a complex story of spiritual upheaval and political transformation--from King David's capital to an administrative outpost of the Roman Empire, from the cosmopolitan city sanctified by Christ to the spiritual center conquered and glorified by Muslims, from the gleaming prize of European Crusaders to the bullet-ridden symbol of the present-day Arab-Israeli conflict. Written with grace and clarity, the product of years of meticulous research, Jerusalem combines the pageant of history with the profundity of searching spiritual analysis. Like Karen Armstrong's A History of God, Jerusalem is a book for the ages.BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Karen Armstrong's Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life.

Aquinas Ethicus: The Moral Teaching of St. Thomas, Vol. 1

Aquinas Ethicus: The Moral Teaching of St. Thomas, Vol. 1

St. Thomas is not only the king of theologians, but the prince of moralists, and it has seemed a pity that his own words on matters of daily practice should have been so long inaccessible to the English reader. Technical Latin is not attractive to those who are unversed in it, and the student of ethics might be easily bewildered by the large admixture of speculative theology in the Summa. In this translation the separation of ethics from theology has been carried out in the main, and the English has been made as simple as the subject-matter permits. This is volume one out of two and a a translation of the principal portions of the second part of the Summa Theologica including more than three hundred endnotes.

Why Jesus Christ Had to Die

Why Jesus Christ Had to Die

Why did Jesus Christ have to die? Not why he died, but why he HAD to die. This book deals with that question directly, completely, singularly, in what may seem to be a new way. Examples and written imagery aid in expressing the points and in broadening the understanding of the direct consequences of what happened when and how he died. Want some hints? Bankruptcy and Jesus as our bad debt expense account.

Abandonment to Divine Providence

Abandonment to Divine Providence

For more than 250 years, this simple classic of inspiration has guided readers of all faiths to the open-hearted acceptance of God's will that is the sure path to serenity, happiness, and spiritual peace."A spiritual classic of the first order... a book for all those who truly seek God." --Dom David Knowles"Father de Caussade has a wonderful way of encouraging the doubtful, of nurturing the personal surrender that is so much a part of the development of faith. The book is a mystery of its own -- and is definitely not for Christians only." --Rabbi Joshua Chasan"Abandonment to Divine Providence is a classic perhaps more necessary now than ever before. It's a little book that rightly rejects the spirituality of fear and trembling (and the modern preoccupation with dreary self-absorption) in favor of an abiding trust in God's active benevolence. This is a work one reads again and again, always with gratitude and astonishment." --Donald Spoto, Author of Blue Angel and The Dark Side of Genius

The Fall of Lucifer (In More Ways Than One)

The Fall of Lucifer (In More Ways Than One)

“Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding” (Proverbs 4:7). When a person’s life embodies the pursuit of wisdom, it bears among its fruits the deep love and respect of family, friends, and colleagues. Derived from The Way of Wisdom, a book honoring biblical scholar Bruce Waltke, whose personal character and biblical study alike display wisdom, this short piece explores what can be learned about wisdom from the fall of Satan. Displaying a high level of scholarship and broadly useful insights, Ronald Youngblood’s piece both stretches and informs. May you, the reader, benefit.

Is Critique Secular?

Is Critique Secular?

This volume interrogates settled ways of thinking about the seemingly interminable conflict between religious and secular values in our world today. What are the assumptions and resources internal to secular conceptions of critique that help or hinder our understanding of one of the most pressing conflicts of our times?Taking as their point of departure the question of whether critique belongs exclusively to forms of liberal democracy that define themselves in opposition to religion, these authors consider the case of the “Danish cartoon controversy” of 2005. They offer accounts of reading, understanding, and critique for offering a way to rethink conventional oppositions between free speech and religious belief, judgment and violence, reason and prejudice, rationality and embodied life. The book, first published in 2009, has been updated for the present edition with a new Preface by the authors.
