The Springs of Contemplation

The Springs of Contemplation

In the Sixties, Merton invited a group of contemplative women -- cut off by inflexible rules from any analysis of important movements in the Church and the world -- to make a retreat with him at his abbey in Kentucky. What he and they said on such themes as "Zen, a Way of Living Life Directly," "Prophetic Choices," and "The Feminine Mystique," is the text of this book.

Impersonal Life

Impersonal Life

"To you who read, I speak. To you, who, through long years and much running to and fro, have been eagerly seeking, in books and teachings, in philosophy and religion, for you know not what—Truth, Happiness, Freedom, God. To you whose Soul is weary and discouraged and almost destitute of hope."—So begins this short inspirational work. "Impersonal Life" is a classic of Christian literature, which aims to bring the reader closer to God.

A Spreading and Abiding Hope

A Spreading and Abiding Hope

Every tradition has its surprising voices, its thinkers who look at things slightly differently than most. Evangelicalism is no exception. Many surprising evangelical voices end up being embarrassments of one sort or another: everyone can choose their favorite example of this phenomenon! Rather than seeking to expose these sorts of negative surprises, this book explores the surprising voice of the late evangelical theologian A. J. Conyers. Conyers's political theology is a resource for a robust evangelical theopolitical imagination. By learning from Conyers, evangelicals can overcome common weaknesses and engage in a more thoroughly Christian, biblical, and evangelical approach to the modern world and its various institutions and challenges. Conyers speaks beyond evangelicalism as well. His vision of the modern world, including its development and major challenges, provides insight into contemporary political theology. His work on the nation-state, free-market capitalism, and the notions of toleration and vocation speaks into and advances important debates. Thus Conyers's evangelical political theology provides both the evangelical tradition itself, as well as political theology as a broader discipline, with a compelling and challenging vision.

The Twelve Powers of Man

The Twelve Powers of Man

The Twelve Powers of Man is a metaphysical look at twelve expressions of the divine power inherent in each of us. Expressions such as love, faith, strength, zeal, and imagination are discussed. A Treatise of Earthly-Mindedness

A Treatise of Earthly-Mindedness

In "A Treatise of Earthly-mindedness," Puritan author Jeremiah Burroughs exposes many of the evils and dangers of being earthly minded. One of the evils brought out by the author is that earthly mindedness is the root of apostasy. He cites the example of Demas. The apostle Paul said that Demas forsook him because he loved this present world. Burroughs exposes the emptiness of worldly pleasures in favor of the heavenly vision that we all should have, and in good Puritan fashion, manages to lucidly address a hundred other essential topics in passing. Christ proclaimed that we are to "seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness" and to avoid being "of the world" and in this work one can discover the scriptural means of true joy and godly sanctification. "This is the great difference between a wicked man and a godly man," write Burroughs, "one minds earthly things, and the other has his conversation in heaven." Burroughs book is a real gem.

Justification, Volume 2

Justification, Volume 2

The second of a two-volume project delving into the doctrine of justification. Michael Horton seeks not simply to recover a clear message of its role in modern Reformed theology, but also to bring a fresh discovery of the gospel in a time when contemporary debates around justification have reignited. The doctrine of justification stands at the center of our systematic reflection on the meaning of salvation and grace as well as our piety, mission, and life together. And yet, within mainline Protestant and evangelical theology, it's often taken for granted or left to gather dust in favor of modern concerns and self-renewal.Volume 2 embarks on the theologically constructive task of investigating the biblical doctrine of justification in light of contemporary exegesis. Taking up the topic from a variety of theological vantage points, Horton engages with contemporary debates in biblical, especially Pauline, scholarship.Part 1 draws out The Horizon of Justification from the Old Testament narratives of Adam and Israel.Part 2 defines The Achievement of Justification in the blood of Christ and seeks to lay the groundwork for understanding its extent.Part 3 focuses on The Gift of Righteousness, delving into a clear articulation of what justification means, its mechanism, and the role of works on the day of judgement.Part 4 proposes a way forward for Receiving Justification and understanding faith and justification within the broader framework of union with Christ.Engaging and thorough, Justification shows that the doctrine of justification finds its most ecumenically significant starting point and proper habitat in unity with Christ, where the greatest consensus, past and present, is to be found among Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Protestant theologies.

Spirit Hermeneutics

Once we have done responsible exegesis, how may we expect the Spirit to apply the text to our lives and communities? Confessions of a Cafeteria Catholic

Confessions of a Cafeteria Catholic

The thoughts contained here have more to do with me and my own perspective of life than the perspective of any one established religious institution, Catholic or otherwise. That is perhaps the goal of all men and women who strive to find themselves and their God while facing the joys and challenges of life, trying to find the faith that keeps them on the path of discovering who they are and what they believe. If we are true to our faith, whatever that faith is, the most important thing is to listen to God, to His revealed message for us personally. God speaks to each of us personally, uniquely, speaking to our own needs. These essays are intended to help open your mind to the possibility of asking questions, not about the veracity of the revealed Word of the Scriptures, but about how we see our relationship with God and how we find our way home. I hope you will find this a useful tool in your own attempt at finding your path.

What the Mystics Know

What the Mystics Know

Drawing from the best and most poetic of Richard Rohr's essays from nearly a quarter of a century, each chapter in this new collection examines one of the seven core mystical truths. Organized according to the mystical paths that every worshiper must follow, Rohr identifies the despair of everyday life, promotes opportunities for change even in the face of pain, thereby transforming one's deeper self into a beacon of light that aids in the perpetual metamorphosis of others. Illuminating these insights with reflections on Christian and Jewish scriptures while citing the greatest religious writers throughout the ages, Rohr offers an unparalleled window into the wisdom of the mystics, within a succinct volume that represents the best treasury of his vast library of writing.
