Hristos este calea prin care Dumnezeu ajunge la noi, și calea prin care noi ajungem la Dumnezeu. Viața noastră izvorăște însăși din moartea și sângele Fiului lui Dumnezeu. Umilința Lui este rădăcina înălțării noastre: „Dar El era străpuns pentru păcatele noastre, zdrobit pentru fărădelegile noastre. Pedeapsa, care ne dă pacea, a căzut peste El, și prin rănile Lui suntem tămăduiți” (Isaia 53:5). El a fost socotit în „numărul celor fărădelege”, așa încât noi să fim socotiți neprihăniți înaintea lui Dumnezeu, prin El. El a fost rănit, pentru ca noi să fim vindecați. El a fost lovit, pentru ca noi să fim eliberați.

Initialement écrites en latin, langue dans laquelle Jean Calvin enseignait ses étudiants, elles paraissent aujourd’hui traduites en français pour la première fois et sont présentées conjointement par les éditions BLF et CALVIN. Le désir des éditeurs est que ce texte soit disponible pour le plus grand nombre et qu’il contribue à l’édification de l’Église. Ce dernier est accusé d'hérésie après un discours où il affirme la nécessité d'entreprendre une réforme religieuse. Les problèmes de son ami obligent Jean Calvin à se cacher. En 1534, le placardage d'un texte contre le pape dans les rues de Paris et de plusieurs villes de province entraîne une répression sévère de François Ier à l'encontre des réformés et Jean Calvin se réfugie en Suisse. Il y publie la première édition de Institution de la religion chrétienne, qui pose les bases du calvinisme et devient un livre essentiel de la réforme chrétienne.
