Did the decisive event in the history of Israel even happen?The Bible presents a living God who speaks and acts, and whose speaking and acting is fundamental to his revelation of himself. God’s action in history may seem obvious to many Christians, but modern philosophy has problematized the idea. Today, many theologians often use the Bible to speak of God while, at best, remaining agnostic about whether he has in fact acted in history. Historical revelation is central to both Jewish and Christian theology. Two major events in the Bible showcase divine agency: the revelation at Sinai in Exodus and the incarnation of Jesus in the gospels. Surprisingly, there is a lack of serious theological reflection on Sinai by both Jewish and Christian scholars, and those who do engage the subject often oscillate about the historicity of what occurred there. Craig Bartholomew explores how the early church understood divine action, looks at the philosophers who derided the idea, and finally shows that the reasons for doubting the historicity of Sinai are not persuasive. The God Who Acts in History provides compelling reasons for affirming that God has acted and continues to act in history.

Dans l’Occident des xvie-xviiie siècles, quelles relations réciproques soudaient les comportements religieux d’une communauté reconnue comme significative à son outillage mental, à sa grille de concepts, à son échelle de valeurs, à son type d’émotivité ? Il s’agit de tenter l’appréhension globale du vécu religieux et d’évaluer, dans des espaces et des temps dits « de chrétienté », l’intégration au sens commun du modèle de christianisme de l’époque. Celui qui nous sert de paramètre, c’est moins le syncrétisme médiéval que la religion de l’âge classique à la fois unanimiste et austère et qui, beaucoup plus que celle du Moyen Âge, voulut au niveau des masses transformer réellement le prescrit en vécu et l’idéal de quelques-uns en vie quotidienne de tous. Et, s’il est vrai que ce modèle de christianisme est à l’arrière-plan de notre discours actuel sur la déchristianisation, alors il faut conclure que la grande christianisation de l’Europe est un fait relativement récent. Car ce sont les deux Réformes, protestante et catholique, qui ont répandu dans les campagnes où vivait l’immense majorité de la population le type de religion et de pratique religieuse qui nous sert de référence pour apprécier la situation présente.

MATTHEW FOX - Teologo di fama internazionale, ex frate domenicano, Fox è considerato uno dei massimi esponenti del movimento della Creation Spirituality, che si prefigge il rinnovamento della Chiesa a partire dal profondo dialogo interreligioso. Fox è autore di 30 libri che hanno venduto milioni di copie in tutto il mondo. Nato nel 1940, Matthew Fox è entrato nell’ordine domenicano nel 1967. Ha insegnato in diversi seminari e università cattoliche. Nel 1983 è iniziato il monitoraggio esplicito della sua opera da parte della Congregazione per la Dottrina della Fede, presieduta dal Card. Ratzinger, culminato nell’espulsione di Fox dall’ordine domenicano e dalle scuole di teologia e università cattoliche nel 1993. Nel 1994 Fox è stato ricevuto nella Chiesa Episcopale (Comunione Anglicana) a San Francisco. Nel 1996 ha fondato la sua “Università per la Spiritualità del Creato”, che ha diretto fino al 2005. Autore di 32 libri e instancabile conferenziere, Fox si dedica con passione da molti anni alla cura di corsi e seminari esperienziali dove si insegna la “spiritualità del creato”.

Satipatthana or the practice of mindfulness is recommended for all who seek to grow spiritually and eventually attain the realization of enlightenment. Buddhism itself is essentially a practical path, a system of physical and psychological techniques designed to bring about this realization. The method here described in this little book may be practised with benefit by all, Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike, because its aim is simply to expand the practiser’s consciousness and bring him face to face with his mind. Buddhist psychology or Abhidhamma teaches that you are not your mind. You already know that you are not your body. But you do not yet know that you are not your mind, because normally you identify yourself with each thought, feeling, impulse, emotion or sensation that comes into your mind. Each takes you on a little trip. Through the practice of mindfulness, you come to observe the rise and fall, the appearance and disappearance of these various thoughts and feelings, and gradually develop a sense of distance and detachment from them. Then you will no longer become caught up by your hangups. This leads to a deep inner peaceful calm. Through further practice, you will develop insight and wisdom, which is the power of consciousness to pierce through the veils of illusion and ignorance to the reality that lies beyond.
