Participation in Sport

Participation in Sport

Although there is growing interest from governments in participation levels in sport, the extent to which governments actively promote ‘sport for all’ and their motives for doing so vary greatly. This is the first book to examine the sport participation policies of national governments across the world and to offer a comparative analysis of the motives for, and successes and failures of those policies.Organized around a series of sixteen national case studies, including the UK, the US, Australia, China and India, the book enables students and practitioners to compare and contrast the development, implementation and impact of sport participation policies throughout the world. An introductory chapter provides a framework for understanding and interpreting those case studies and each chapter then addresses the following key themes: national structures for sport national sporting cultures participation levels in organized sport the nature and extent of government intervention implementation of governmental policy the impact of government policy. With contributions from many of the world’s leading experts on sport policy and sport development, this book is essential reading for anybody with an interest in the role of governments in relation to supporting and regulating their citizens’ involvement in sport.

Match Mentality

Match Mentality

Match Mentality isn’t just about shooting—it’s about the preparation and the complicated feelings, emotions, and physiological changes that will occur during a competition. Technical training and talent go a long way in shooting sports, but mental fortitude, visualization, and a competitive mindset are the key factors that will enable you to carry through and actually win. The simple fact is that practical shooting matches are more than a test of your technical shooting ability. They assess the professionalism of your preparation. Ben Stoeger, the United States Practical Shooting Association National Champion and International Practical Shooting Confederation World Champion, demonstrates how to develop a stage plan, memorize it, execute it, and, on a deeper level, how to deal with pressure. Honing these skills—the mental game of shooting—is what Match Mentality is all about.

Born to Run

Famous for a Time

Famous for a Time

Celebrating Canadian athletes and sporting history. The cultural impact of sport on a nation is not slight. Famous for a Time explores a number of important, if not well remembered, Canadian athletes and the sports they played to help explain the nation’s complicated history, sporting and otherwise. It is an exploration that reveals the socio-cultural trends that have shaped Canada since Confederation.Through the prism of some exceptional athletes, the prevailing attitudes of many Canadians about class, race, masculinity, femininity, and national identity are laid bare. Here, from the sidelines, we learn how these attitudes have changed — or not, as the case may be — over time. From team sports such as lacrosse, baseball, and cricket to Canada’s cycling craze, track and field, and boxing, each chapter offers insight into an important aspect of the nation’s narrative. The winners and losers of Canada’s games simply mirror the larger questions that have faced Canadian society across three centuries.

The Orvis Streamside Guide to Trout Foods and Their Imitations

The Orvis Streamside Guide to Trout Foods and Their Imitations

Every fly fisher would agree that knowing your mayflies from your stoneflies is strongly correlated with a successful day on the water. This knowledge is vital because, as author Tom Rosenbauer notes, trout are shy and careful and can be fussy about what they eat. In addition, they won’t hesitate to swim away and leave a meal if they feel threatened. In The Orvis Streamside Guide to Trout Foods and Their Imitations, Rosenbauer explains how and when to use many types of trout foods, including aquatic insects, terrestrial insects, crustaceans, and more. Designed with both the novice and intermediate fly fisher in mind, Rosenbauer teaches readers how to:Ambush troutIdentify types of insectsPresent trout food properlyObserve what trout are eatingUse imitation trout foodsAnd moreWith The Orvis Streamside Guide to Trout Foods and Their Imitations at their sides, fly fishermen will be able to tell the difference between mayflies, stoneflies, caddisflies, midges, and a variety of other insects. In addition, they will also know when to use real foods and when to rely on the imitations in their tackle boxes.Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for fishermen. Our books for anglers include titles that focus on fly fishing, bait fishing, fly-casting, spin casting, deep sea fishing, and surf fishing. Our books offer both practical advice on tackle, techniques, knots, and more, as well as lyrical prose on fishing for bass, trout, salmon, crappie, baitfish, catfish, and more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to publishing books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked by other publishers and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Peter Capstick's Africa

Peter Capstick's Africa

Peter Hathaway Capstick is a name synonymous with excitement, danger, and high adventure. Sportsman, adventurer, raconteur par excellence, Capstick has been recognized as a modern-day master of African hunting literature—a successor to the works of Hemingway and Robert Ruark.Capstick has written post facto about classic hunters of the past and safaris in which he participated as a professional hunter in such books as Death in the Silent Places and Death in the Dark Continent. Now, he presents an enthralling tale of an entirely new safari, an exciting first-person adventure of his own dangerous and very personal excursion. The result is a definitive work on African hunting, and one of his greatest achievements. In 1985, Capstick went back into the African bush with two top photographers and a crack professional hunter. It was a venture taken for personal challenge, and for the chance to look anew at what had become of the Africa immortalized in his own earlier works. Peter Capstick’s Africa: A Return to the Long Grass is the chronicle, in text and pictures, of this safari. It is full of the same edge-of-the-seat narration, witty anecdotes, and wry observations that have made Capstick’s earlier books so popular. The text of the book has been integrated with the photographs of Paul Kimble and Dick van Niekerk into a lavish full-color production that illustrates Capstick’s narrative in a way his fans have never seen before.

Safari Rifles II

Safari Rifles II

Gone are the days of simple-solid and softpoint-bullets for a mere dozen-and-a-half African calibers. The sheer number of products on the market today staggers the mind and bewilders even experienced hunters. Boddington presents his information in clearly explained, bite-size pieces that we can digest, and in the process he gives us a solid understanding of what works and what doesn't. By the time you finish this book, you will be thoroughly prepared for your next safari. Is the .375 H&H really the ultimate caliber for all dangerous game safaris? Can you shoot African big game with tiny calibers like the .17 HMR and the .22 Hornet? What sights are really ideal for big-bore rifles? Is a single shot a responsible choice for dangerous game? Do "deer calibers" such as the .30-06 and the .270 function in a wild and dangerous Africa? Many writers proclaim their knowledge of African hunting, but few have the true in-depth experience that comes from thousands of days afield. Boddington's Safari Rifles II is a rare gem of a book, offering solid information based on vast experience and insight gathered over the last thirty years of hunting on the Dark Continent.
