The Fortune Wild&Tipping Barrels

The Fortune Wild&Tipping Barrels

In this bundled version of two of our most popular short films, activists from the Sitka surf team set out to search for waves on remote stretches of British Columbia's unspoiled coast. As they surf, explore and learn from local conservationists, they find that protecting these wild places for the future is just as important as enjoying them today. Presented in partnership with Pacific Wild. In The Fortune Wild, a new Sitka Films production directed by Ben Gulliver, a small group of surfers set out to seek their own kind of riches on some of the most remote beaches of the Canadian coast. The Fortune Wild is about the peace and promise of wild places, but it’s also about learning to see the natural world in a more reverent way. Featuring interviews with Severn Cullis-Suzuki, Haida leader and activist Guujaaw and Haida artists Christian White and Gwaliga Hart, it’s a glimpse into a system where tradition and respect for the land are values that can’t be bought or sold. One-third documentary, one-third surf and adventure film and one-third storybook wander into the unknown, it's a beautiful and slightly eccentric look at what makes the West Coast so priceless and so worthy to protect. A unique combination of surfing and environmental journalism, Tipping Barrels follows brothers Arran and Reid Jackson into the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest, where they learn more about the region and the threats it faces. The main issue presented in the film is Enbridge’s proposed Northern Gateway Pipeline, designed to carry bitumen from the Alberta tar sands to Kitimat, on the north coast of British Columbia, where it would be loaded onto supertankers bound for markets in Asia and the United States.
