Flexible Work Organizations

Flexible Work Organizations

This book focuses on the challenges of capacity building for flexible work organizations in Asia, and demonstrates how business enterprises practice reactive flexible capacity (in the form of adaptiveness and responsiveness) to cope with changing and uncertain business environments. The book provides examples of how this can be achieved by means of various organizational change initiatives, leadership strategies, re-engineering, innovation in products and processes, the use of information and communication technology, reshaping learning orientations, and more. As these topics are supported by research and case studies situated in different sectors and countries across Asia, the book will provide a useful resource for a broad readership including: management students and researchers, practicing business managers, consultants, and professional institutions.

Central Bank Reforms In the Baltics, Russia, and the Other Countries of the Former Soviet Union

This study reviews the experience under these programs and the economic developments in the countries that undertook them.

Summary of Debra Fine's The Fine Art of Small Talk

Summary of Debra Fine's The Fine Art of Small Talk

Excerpt From Summary of Debra Fine's The Fine Art of Small Talk #1 Small talk is commonly used as a synonym for conversing with strangers, but it also refers to the type of conversation that occurs in between two more substantial topics. It can be very anxiety-inducing for some people, and this book will teach you how to master small talk. #2 The first step is to let go of the idea that we are all supposed to know how to converse with strangers and acquaintances. It is simply not true. We are not taught how to do it, and there is no biological mechanism that takes over when we are put in a conversational bind.

Awaken Your Genius

Awaken Your Genius

A WALL STREET JOURNAL BESTSELLER Unlock your originality and unleash your unique talents with this simple guide from the acclaimed author of Think Like a Rocket Scientist.   We say some people march to the beat of a different drummer. But implicit in this cliché is that the rest of us march to the same beat. We sleepwalk through life, find ourselves on well-worn paths that were never ours to walk, and become a silent extra in someone else’s story. Extraordinary people carve their own paths as leaders and creators. They think and act with genuine independence. They stand out from the crowd because they embody their own shape and color. We call these people geniuses—as if they’re another breed. But genius isn’t for a special few. It can be cultivated. This book will show you how. You’ll learn how to discard what no longer serves you and discover your first principles—the qualities that make up your genius. You’ll be equipped to escape your intellectual prisons and generate original insights from your own depths. You’ll discover how to look where others don’t look and see what others don’t see. You’ll give birth to your genius, the universe-denter you were meant to be.

Real Wage Adjustment in the Former Soviet Union

Real Wage Adjustment in the Former Soviet Union

Since 1991, the economies of the former Soviet Union have experienced sizeable shocks that have pushed equilibrium real wages far from pre-transition levels. This paper sets out a framework in which to assess the degree of real wage adjustment needed to restore equilibrium, and discusses practical problems in applying wage targets and monitoring real wage developments. A key policy conclusion is that because the accuracy of real wage targets is inevitably suspect, observable indicators should be identified to evaluate the adequacy of actual movements in real wages and of the wage targets; rigid indexation rules should be avoided in nominal incomes policies. This is a Paper on Policy Analysis and Assessment and the author(s) would welcome any comments on the present text. Confessions of the Entrepreneur

Confessions of the Entrepreneur

Bob Thomas is an entrepreneur who created two world-class high-tech companies, one a division of Emerson — a Fortune 500 company — and the other a division of ABB — a giant Swiss conglomerate.  Both were built from scratch without investing, borrowing, selling stock, or taking venture capital. Thomas shares his entrepreneurial secrets and teaches what it takes to make a lasting mark in business and to become globally competitive. At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge and global competitiveness, Thomas stands as a genuine hero of free-market capitalism — an example of entrepreneurial inventiveness and applied innovation.  Thomas knows the best way to create value is to connect creativity with technology, combined with world-class salesmanship.  Bob's book is instructive and cautionary, filled with lessons about innovation, character, leadership, and values. Thomas points out that the CEOs of large American corporations today are not entrepreneurs, but rather are bureaucratically trained managers from the Wharton, Harvard, and Stanford type schools of business. The founding entrepreneurs, like Thomas himself, have long ago moved on, leaving behind the day-to-day business of finance, mergers, acquisitions, and big company politics in the hands of bureaucratic caretakers. Surprisingly, Thomas argues that both founding entrepreneurs and successor bureaucratic managers play an equally essential roll in a thriving free-market capitalistic society. Although Bob's writing is humorous, it is not without controversy; nor is he likely to qualify for an award in political correctness. Thomas speaks his mind, letting the chips fall where they may. Listed among his do’s and don'ts, for example, is his advice to, "never hire a woman under 45 years of age."

Wanda Orlikowski.

Means of Control

Means of Control

You are being surveilled right now. This “startling exposé” (The Economist) reveals how the U.S. government allied with data brokers, tech companies, and advertisers to monitor us through the phones we carry and the devices in our home.“A revealing . . . startling . . . timely . . . fascinating, sometimes terrifying examination of the decline of privacy in the digital age.”—Kirkus ReviewsSHORTLISTED FOR THE SABEW BEST IN BUSINESS AWARD“That evening, I was given a glimpse inside a hidden world. . . . An entirely new kind of surveillance program—one designed to track everyone.”For the past five years—ever since a chance encounter at a dinner party—journalist Byron Tau has been piecing together a secret story: how the whole of the internet and every digital device in the world became a mechanism of intelligence, surveillance, and monitoring.Of course, our modern world is awash in surveillance. Most of us are dimly aware of this: Ever get the sense that an ad is “following” you around the internet? But the true potential of our phones, computers, homes, credit cards, and even the tires underneath our cars to reveal our habits and behavior would astonish most citizens. All of this surveillance has produced an extraordinary amount of valuable data about every one of us. That data is for sale—and the biggest customer is the U.S. government. In the years after 9/11, the U.S. government, working with scores of anonymous companies, many scattered across bland Northern Virginia suburbs, built a foreign and domestic surveillance apparatus of breathtaking scope—one that can peer into the lives of nearly everyone on the planet. This cottage industry of data brokers and government bureaucrats has one directive—“get everything you can”—and the result is a surreal world in which defense contractors have marketing subsidiaries and marketing companies have defense contractor subsidiaries. And the public knows virtually nothing about it.Sobering and revelatory, Means of Control is the defining story of our dangerous grand bargain—ubiquitous cheap technology, but at what price?

Quantum Macroeconomics

Quantum Macroeconomics

Quantum Macroeconomics presents a new paradigm in macroeconomic analysis initiated by Bernard Schmitt. It explains the historical origin, the analytical contents, and the actual relevance of this new paradigm, with respect to current major economic issues at national and international level. These issues concern both advanced and emerging market economies, referring to inflation, unemployment, financial instability, and economic crises. In the first part of this volume, leading scholars explain the historical origin and analytical content of quantum macroeconomics. The second part explores its relevance with respect to the current major economic issues such as the sovereign debt crisis and European monetary union. The volume also features two previously unpublished papers by Bernard Schmitt. The main findings of this book concern the need to go beyond agents’ behaviour to understand the structural origin of a variety of macroeconomic problems, notably, inflation, unemployment, financial instability, and economic crises. The originality that pervades all contributions is plain, when one considers the lack of any structural explanation of national and international economic disorders in the literature within the mainstream approach to economics. This edited volume is of great interest to those who study macroeconomics, monetary economics and money and banking.
