L’industrialisation de la France entre 1880 et 1970 reste un phénomène complexe qui ne se prête pas aux schémas réducteurs. Industrialisation sans révolution a-t-on pu écrire. Il est vrai que les processus de modernisation ont pris des chemins spécifiques dans un pays touché par la stagnation démographique, une faible croissance urbaine et deux guerres mondiales. Souvent l’on a décrit une France rétive au changement, frileuse. La comparaison avec l’étranger a cependant ses limites car les différents pays industrialisés n’ont pas fait de choix identiques. Toujours est-il que la France industrielle, avec ses ingénieurs et ses ouvriers qualifiés, ses banlieues inventives et ses secteurs de pointe mérite qu’on ne la caricature pas. D’autant que depuis quelques années, l’historiographie s’est largement renouvelée, soit par des travaux d’ampleur, soit par des thématiques originales. Sans se réfugier encore une fois derrière la spécificité française, il est évident que notre pays a répondu à sa façon aux nouveaux défis de ce que l’on nomme pour simplifier la seconde révolution industrielle. Celle-ci fut en fait un phénomène continu, contrasté selon les régions, inégal selon les périodes. La France n’a pas manqué d’esprit d’entreprise : ses dirigeants et ses cadres ont souvent fait preuve d’autorité et d’audace. La formation des élites techniques comme l’adaptation du monde ouvrier brossent en fait un tableau diversifié, marqué par d’évidentes réussites mais aussi quelques blocages. Les ouvriers, masse croissante qui a inquiété par ses revendications, ont dû quant à eux se trouver, se fixer, préciser leurs attentes. Le destin du monde ouvrier fut marqué par les transformations des méthodes de production qui ont affaibli son autonomie mais n’ont pas entamé le poids de ses revendications. Progressivement, le monde ouvrier a su prendre sa place dans le concert national. En un mot, la période entre 1880 et 1970 permet de tracer le tableau d’une France qui avait déjà un passé industriel important et qui, contre vents et marées, s’efforça de rester dans le peloton de tête des nations modernes.
