Prioritization of Failure Modes in Manufacturing Processes

Prioritization of Failure Modes in Manufacturing Processes

In the contemporary automotive manufacturing industry, service providers are continuously working to improve system optimization in order to remain competitive in the market and deliver quality products to satisfy their customers. With this comes the possibility of failure, rejection and reworking of the components or services in the system, which can incur high costs and impact the reputation of an organization. This book uses Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) to assess, investigate and predict the Risk Priority Number (RPN) of potential failures for three companies within the manufacturing industry:A metal component supplier in the automotive sectorPart manufacturer for the automobile and engineering industriesManufacturer of suspension components for commercial vehiclesIntegrating human expertise and artificial intelligence on a single platform, the authors use fuzzy logic as a tool to overcome the vagueness associated with traditional methods of assessing potential failures. The book also details the procedure and scales of how to conduct FMEA, offering guidance on how to input and rank each risk within manufacturing processes across a range of sectors's. Each of the three real-world cases offer suggested improvements for the companies themselves, alongside takeaways for researchers and professionals within the fields of manufacturing and supply chain management.

Creating a Learning Society

Creating a Learning Society

“A superb new understanding of the dynamic economy as a learning society, one that goes well beyond the usual treatment of education, training, and R&D.”—Robert Kuttner, author of The Stakes: 2020 and the Survival of American Democracy   Since its publication Creating a Learning Society has served as an effective tool for those who advocate government policies to advance science and technology. It shows persuasively how enormous increases in our standard of living have been the result of learning how to learn, and it explains how advanced and developing countries alike can model a new learning economy on this example. Creating a Learning Society: Reader’s Edition uses accessible language to focus on the work’s central message and policy prescriptions. As the book makes clear, creating a learning society requires good governmental policy in trade, industry, intellectual property, and other important areas. The text’s central thesis—that every policy affects learning—is critical for governments unaware of the innovative ways they can propel their economies forward.   “Profound and dazzling. In their new book, Joseph E. Stiglitz and Bruce C. Greenwald study the human wish to learn and our ability to learn and so uncover the processes that relate the institutions we devise and the accompanying processes that drive the production, dissemination, and use of knowledge . . . This is social science at its best.”—Partha Dasgupta, University of Cambridge “An impressive tour de force, from the theory of the firm all the way to long-term development, guided by the focus on knowledge and learning . . . This is an ambitious book with far-reaching policy implications.”—Giovanni Dosi, director, Institute of Economics, Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna “[A] sweeping work of macroeconomic theory.”—Harvard Business Review

Chinese Management in the 'Harmonious Society'

Chinese Management in the 'Harmonious Society'

Whither Chinese management? The Middle Kingdom has come a long way since the economic reforms were introduced after 1978. As ownership has opened up and has become more fragmented, the state-owned firms no longer dominate the scene, nor does their management model. Managing has also become more complex and diversified, as well as more professional. This book asks what the next steps are likely to be and will assess the current directions in which Chinese managers are developing, as its economy slows down in the face of global uncertainty. It aims to update previous works in the field covering business and management in these countries. It covers a wide range of topics, including banking, competition, employee satisfaction, expatriates, industrial relations, HRM, organization, SMEs, social responsibility, strategic sourcing, trust and so on. The book also asks in which future directions management may be moving in this important part of the international economy. The authors are all experts in their fields and are all based in universities and business schools in countries such as Australia and the UK, among others. The work is aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate students in business administration especially those on MBA programmes, as well as those studying development economics, management studies and related courses, including lecturers in those subjects. This book was published as a special issue of Asia Pacific Business Review.

Ways and Means, a Pamphlet on Revenues

Ways and Means, a Pamphlet on Revenues

Essay. Xenophon the Athenian was born 431 B.C. He was a pupil of Socrates. He marched with the Spartans, and was exiled from Athens. Sparta gave him land and property in Scillus, where he lived for many years before having to move once more, to settle in Corinth. He died in 354 B.C. Revenues describes Xenophon's ideas to solve the problem of poverty in Athens, and thus remove an excuse to mistreat the Athenian allies.

Innovation Policies and Practices within Innovation Ecosystems

Innovation Policies and Practices within Innovation Ecosystems

While intense efforts of clarification have been made to distinguish between the concept of system and ecosystem, and between the different forms of ecosystems, very few works have addressed the issues of how these different forms of ecosystems are interacting in a dynamic perspective, or of how the notion of a dynamic ecosystem could emerge from the static frame of a system approach. The five chapters in this volume precisely aim at adding to this literature by highlighting the interplay between different types of innovation systems. A common thread among the five chapters of the book is the recognition of the need to develop new lenses to formally account for adaptative behaviour within clusters, networks, or regional innovation systems using the ecosystem metaphor. The diversity and heterogeneity of agents, the complexity of relationships, and new forms of organisation (underground, middleground, and upperground) are the main characteristics of innovation ecosystems, in contrast to more traditional concepts like clusters or networks. In essence, the five chapters add various complexity dimensions (relationships, knowledge, systems, etc.) to the existing knowledge on ecosystems. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal Industry and Innovation.

Some of the letters were too confidential to be handed over to the office typing pool. This was way back in the late eighties and early nineties, when letters were still written by hand, and sent by mail.We did not know that within the next 15 years, the whole world would be tied up with an electronic network, and correspondence would be done by tapping on a keyboard on a desktop screen. Also, this book is not restricted to letter writing to people in your own country or area. In this millennial world today, your job is to expand your horizons and that is why, this book is going to tell you all about writing letters in a global context. Also, you are going to be told something about cultures and traditions, and business environments of other lands and people, which may look strange to you, but that is the way business writing has been done for millenniums, according to their culture, standard of literacy, and society. Many people who are not quite well versed with office etiquette are under the impression that letter writing is something not very important because after all, you are messaging your clients, or you have one stereotyped format, which you send out as acknowledgment for every email sent to your company, with a paragraph telling the client that he is going to be contacted by somebody in the next 12 – 24 hours, and thank you for getting in touch with us. The mail, of course, has a do not reply address on top.You may think that this is a pretty nifty and modern way of tracking your correspondence, but in many parts of the world, where business dealings and environments are still pretty old-fashioned, a well-written letter is quite impressive, especially when the receiver makes his first impression on your correspondence, especially when it is a first-time letter to his company. I remember, way back in 87, when I was at university, in a comparatively small town, and went to the market, to buy some handmade traditional shoes, for which that particular town was famous all over the country. They did not speaking English, there.

Structural Change in Japan: Macroeconomic Impact and Policy Challenges

Structural Change in Japan: Macroeconomic Impact and Policy Challenges

This volume, by Bijan B. Aghevli, Tamim Bayoumi, and Guy Meredith, is based on a seminar on structural change in Japan held in early 1997 and chaired by the IMF's First Deputy Managing Director, Stanley Fischer. Discussion of teh day-to-day management of the standard levers of fiscal and monetary policy is interlinked with consideration for the more deep-seated structural issues. By shifting and destabilizing the underlying economic relationships and creating uncertainty, structural change complicates the task of policy analysis. This volume describes how the IMF is responding to these challenges and how outside experts assess this effect.

Monetary Policy in the New Normal

Monetary Policy in the New Normal

The proposed SDN would take stock of the current debate on the shape that monetary policy should take after the crisis. It revisits the pros and cons of expanding the objectives of monetary policy, the merits of turning unconventional policies into conventional ones, how to make monetary policy frameworks more resilient to the risk of being constrained by the zero-lower bound going forward, and the institutional challenges to preserve central bank independence with regards to monetary policy, while allowing adequate government oversight over central banks’ new responsibilities. It will draw policy conclusions where consensus has been reached, and highlight the areas where more work is needed to get more granular policy advice.

Tecnofeudalesimo

Tecnofeudalesimo

Tutti dovrebbero leggerlo. 10 e lode.” Irvine Welsh

Burn the Boats

Burn the Boats

*A WALL STREET JOURNAL BESTSELLER!*In this gripping rags-to-riches instant classic, Matt Higgins provides the blueprint he used to go from a desperate sixteen-year-old high school dropout caring for his sick mother in Queens, New York, to a shark on Shark Tank and the faculty of Harvard Business School. Told with raw emotion and radical transparency, Higgins writes the definitive tome on the oldest life hack in history: burn the boats. From Sun Tzu to Julius Caesar, the ancient Israelites to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, there’s a bold and highly effective tactic seen throughout history—when leaders want to motivate their troops for success, they destroy all opportunities for retreat, and fully commit to the mission. They burn their boats; it’s win or perish, and the clarity of sheer desperation propels them to victory. But the conviction of crisis decision-making can also be harnessed in peacetime to achieve unfathomable success. Higgins draws upon extensive research, historical precedent, and dozens of firsthand case studies—from actress-turned-entrepreneur Scarlett Johansson to NFL Coach Rex Ryan—that prove merely contemplating Plan B diminishes the probability of ever achieving Plan A. Now a self-made serial entrepreneur with a $1 billion consumer portfolio of some of America’s most iconic brands, Higgins explains how to burn the metaphorical boats that undermine total commitment, ranging from imposter syndrome to paralyzing anxiety to toxic leadership.Burn the Boats is the manifesto for anyone looking to level up their life while navigating risk. Each chapter includes clear, actionable advice that readers can immediately start applying to their own lives, along with inspiration drawn from dozens of real-life success stories. This book will give you the courage to confidently go all in on your life’s true purpose.
