FDA in the Twenty-First Century

FDA in the Twenty-First Century

In its decades-long effort to assure the safety, efficacy, and security of medicines and other products, the Food and Drug Administration has struggled with issues of funding, proper associations with industry, and the balance between consumer choice and consumer protection. Today, these challenges are compounded by the pressures of globalization, the introduction of novel technologies, and fast-evolving threats to public health. With essays by leading scholars and government and private-industry experts, FDA in the Twenty-First Century addresses perennial and new problems and the improvements the agency can make to better serve the public good. The collection features essays on effective regulation in an era of globalization, consumer empowerment, and comparative effectiveness, as well as questions of data transparency, conflicts of interest, industry responsibility, and innovation policy, all with an emphasis on pharmaceuticals. The book also intervenes in the debate over off-label drug marketing and the proper role of the FDA before and after a drug goes on the market. Dealing honestly and thoroughly with the FDA's successes and failures, these essays rethink the structure, function, and future of the agency and the effect policy innovations may have on regulatory institutions abroad.

LanCo Catalogue Sales

LanCo Catalogue Sales

The issue before the directors meeting of LanCo Catalogue Sales was the high level of product returns that the company was experiencing. These product returns were eroding profitability at a remarkable rate, however the directors were split into two camps over what to do about the problem. One camp believed that speeding up shipments would reduce the returned merchandise, while the other camp believed that this would merely increase shipping costs and reduce profits even further. LanCo management was determined that the "returns problem" must first be understood, then actions must be taken to reduce returns, in order to improve the profitability of the company.

How Life Imitates Chess

How Life Imitates Chess

Garry Kasparov was the highest-rated chess player in the world for over twenty years and is widely considered the greatest player that ever lived. In How Life Imitates Chess Kasparov distills the lessons he learned over a lifetime as a Grandmaster to offer a primer on successful decision-making: how to evaluate opportunities, anticipate the future, devise winning strategies. He relates in a lively, original way all the fundamentals, from the nuts and bolts of strategy, evaluation, and preparation to the subtler, more human arts of developing a personal style and using memory, intuition, imagination and even fantasy. Kasparov takes us through the great matches of his career, including legendary duels against both man (Grandmaster Anatoly Karpov) and machine (IBM chess supercomputer Deep Blue), enhancing the lessons of his many experiences with examples from politics, literature, sports and military history. With candor, wisdom, and humor, Kasparov recounts his victories and his blunders, both from his years as a world-class competitor as well as his new life as a political leader in Russia. An inspiring book that combines unique strategic insight with personal memoir, How Life Imitates Chess is a glimpse inside the mind of one of today's greatest and most innovative thinkers.

Business Networks in Clusters and Industrial Districts

Business Networks in Clusters and Industrial Districts

During the 1980s the Marshallian concept of industrial district (ID) became widely popular due to the resurgence of interest in the reasons that make the agglomeration of specialised industries a territorial phenomenon worth being analysed. The analysis of clusters and IDs has often been limited, considering only the local dimension of the created business networks. The external links of these systems have been systematically under-evaluated. This book offers a deep insight into the evolution of these systems and the internal-external mechanism of knowledge circulation and learning. This means that the access to external knowledge (information or R&D cooperative research) or to productive networks (global supply chains) is studied in order to describe how external knowledge is absorbed and how local clusters or districts become global systems. It provides a unified approach; showing that existing capabilities expand when locally embedded knowledge is combined with accessible external knowledge. In this view, external knowledge linkages reduce the danger of cognitive ‘lock-in’ and ‘over-embeddedness’, which may become important obstacles to local learning and innovation when technological trajectories and global economic conditions change. Developments in Corporate Governance

Developments in Corporate Governance

This book explores the dynamic landscape of corporate governance, focusing on the perspective of emerging markets. It delves into the evolving governance frameworks of these markets, highlighting variations in board structures, CEO roles, and director compositions due to diverse traditions and cultures. Emerging markets differ significantly from developed markets, characterized by concentrated ownership and the prevalence of family business groups within weak property rights environments. Additionally, there is a notable tension between direct ownership and control rights in these markets. The book's relevance is underscored by the growing importance of emerging markets in the global economy. These markets have contributed significantly to global output and growth, rapidly integrating into global trade and finance networks. Advocating for a dynamic view of corporate governance, the book emphasizes the need for continuous evaluation and adaptation of governance practices. It covers contemporary governance topics such as the role of whistle-blowers, governance challenges in start-ups, governance practices in family firms, and evolving governance regulations in emerging economies. This diverse coverage deepens readers' understanding of developments in governance issues, particularly within emerging economies.

Sustainability in the Oil and Gas Sector

Sustainability in the Oil and Gas Sector

The push for sustainability in the oil and gas sector has taken center stage in both climate action debates and mitigation/adaptation efforts in recent decades. As the global mission for sustainable energy increasingly moves away from oil and gas as primary resources, the study of sustainability in the industry is often posited as counterintuitive. However, it is imperative to unearth methods to integrate sustainability efforts in the oil and gas industry, as it will likely retain its prominence in the foreseeable future. This book ignites academic discussion regarding ongoing and necessary mitigation and adaptation strategies in the oil and gas industry that will help address the ongoing climate crisis. The chapters featured in this collection pose several important queries regarding current sustainability efforts in the oil and gas industry and propose avenues for improvement. In particular, they focus on carbon emissions in exploration and production, land use patterns and biodiversity, and ethics in the oil and gas industry. Working against the background of the UN Agenda 2030 and Sustainable Development Goals, this book will be of great interest to academics and students of sustainability strategies, energy, innovation, and business ethics, as well as policymakers and practitioners tasked with analyzing these areas.Thomas Walker is a Professor of Finance, the Director and Academic Lead of the Emerging Risks Information Center (ERIC), the Director of the Jacques Ménard/BMO Center for Capital Markets, and a Research Chair in Emerging Risk Management at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada.
